Coteau de Montlouis and Île de Bondésir

The Île de Bondésir trail first winds its way through flora and fauna before reaching a meadow bordering the Loire. The route then climbs to the heights of the town to discover a chic neighbourhood and enjoy beautiful views from the top of the chalk cliff.

Description of the walk

Access: the Maison de la Loire car park is located along the D751, east of Montlouis-sur-Loire (well signposted in both directions).

(S/E) Start by going down the stairs to reach Île de Bondésir. Follow the path in front of you, then quickly turn right onto a pleasant, wild path winding through unspoilt nature. It's hard to believe that you're only a few metres from the town centre. Leave a large hut made of branches on your left to reach a deforested area.

(1) At the fork, take a quick detour to your left to reach an information panel on the banks of the Loire (unobstructed view), then head towards the hillside.

Note: significant deforestation work was carried out by the local authority at the end of 2016 as part of flood risk management, destroying all the biodiversity in the central area of the island. It is therefore pointless to continue your walk eastwards until nature has reclaimed its rights.

As you approach the Loire embankment (200 metres further on), you will find a path on the right that leads into the vegetation and back to your starting point. Once you are back where you started, at the top of the stairs, continue to the left for a few dozen metres.

(2) Cross the road:Caution: fairly heavy traffic and no pedestrian crossing to climb the Montaigu path where there are a few cave dwellings. In the left-hand bend, keep to your right and follow the low wall to find a small path that joins another, steeper street, which you will need to climb.
From there, follow part of the Montlouis-sur-Loire discovery route, which is marked with numerous information panels. Opposite you is Les Caves de l'Épine Fleurie (no. 8). Continue to the right along the pleasant Chemin Tourné, lined with trees and beautiful houses, which turns left.

(3) At the next crossroads, turn right and then right again onto Chemin de Bellevue (which lives up to its name). It joins the edge of the cliff and then runs along it on the left for more than 500 metres. The view of the Loire is very clear in places.

(4) Head towards the Church of Saint-Laurent opposite you, which you can visit if you wish. Retrace your steps and begin your descent towards the Loire.

(5) Just after the presbytery, go down the steps on your left (Le Pen de la Halle) and enter the Viguerie garden. Exit through the other gate, to the left of the fountain, join the road and follow it to the right until you reach the Tourist Office square. Finally, cross to the other side of the road and follow the avenue of plane trees to the car park (S/E).

the walk is very pleasant. There seem to be some errors in the directions halfway along the walk (when you start heading back towards Montlouis)

A short, unpretentious but unusual and varied walk between the Loire and the village.

Don't hesitate to "go off the beaten track" and explore both the circular route and island/Loire riverbank side and the village side.

The initial route is limited in these two respects.
But it's a "short" route, so you can't have everything!

Ideal for families and children because it is short but varied and easily adaptable for little legs.

There are many birds and the banks of the Loire are as exotic as ever.
The information boards along the village route are interesting.

If the water level of the Loire and the season allow (nesting between March and August), a picnic on the banks of the Loire and a drive through the surrounding area on small roads to Mont-Louis are a pleasant addition to a day trip.

And it is ideally located between Amboise and Tours.

PS: You can also return at the end of the route, after point 5, by crossing the presbytery garden and returning along the lower road, via the banks of the Loire if the river level is suitable, taking the steps on the left after the tourist office rather than returning along the road.

You reach point 1 via the riverbank, which is very pretty and full of birds.

In the village, there are a few points of interest to discover thanks to the information boards along the village route.
Don't miss the staircase leading to the small garden below the presbytery.
There are some unexpected residents...

PS: for your information, the GPX track does not include the circular route around the island, and the explanation for finding starting point 2 after the circular route around the island when coming up from the car park is ambiguous.
Left or right in the car park, it depends on which way you are facing!

Starting point 2 is simply close to the car park, on the other side of the road a short distance away (about 50 metres) as you head back up towards the village.

General comment for all topos: indicating distances in metres between two points where there is a change of direction is often simpler and more effective than long explanations!

We will move on to the subscription because it is often necessary to read the IGN maps to confirm or refute any doubts based on the explanations.
There are so many paths, roads and signs on the routes that creating a guide for the general public is certainly not easy.

It's actually more complicated and, paradoxically, more difficult than in the mountains or in "sparsely populated" areas.
Well done to the volunteers who share routes on VISO RANDO.

Walk taken on a beautiful April morning.
No topographical difficulties, but be sure to follow the instructions on the map to wind your way through the village of Montlouis (or the GPX track).
This is a charming little walk on the outskirts of Tours.
The route through the village is interesting, with beautiful houses and lovely views of the river.
For the part on Bondésir Island, once we reached POI No. 1, we continued along the small path to the east to the end of the island, then returned via a small path further south, still on the island. It's a real change of scenery. The walk is about 8 km long.

In winter, Bondésir Island is partially flooded: perhaps it would be a good idea to POINT THIS OUT? However, the eastern part—upstream from the Loire—remains accessible and... the views of the river on one side and the hillside on the other... are magnificent!

A very pleasant route with a pastry break in the centre of Montlouis that is not to be missed. Beautiful views.

I extended it by heading further east on Bondésir Island, then climbing up the Miltière hillside along pretty, easily passable paths. We then joined the GR and the Bellevue path and the church: 7 to 8 km, 2 hours 15 minutes, returning just before nightfall!!!
