The Ballon de Servance from La Planche des Belles Filles

A lovely hike undertaken in April. The route leads to the summit of the Ballon de Servance (the boundary marker is inaccessible as it is situated on military land). From this vantage point, hikers will enjoy views of Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle and the Ballon d'Alsace.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at La Planche resort.

(S/E) After passing the ticket office on your left and crossing the chalet’s ski lift, head left following the Green Rectangle (GR®533).

(1) After 200 metres, turn right following the Blue Triangle.

(2) Upon reaching the Étang des Belles Filles (a path on the left leads to the Ballon Saint-Antoine), head towards the other end of the lake to follow the Green Diamond.

(3) At the junction at a place called Vieil Étang, head right following the Green Rectangle. When you reach the next crossroads.

(4) Turn right, following the Red Triangle, to reach the Refuge de la Grande Goutte.

(5) Continue following the same markings. You’ll reach a fork in the path towards the Ballon d’Alsace.

(6) Take the left-hand path towards the Col du Stalon and the Ballon de Servance.

(7) When you reach the Col de Stalon, take the path opposite, marked with the Green Rectangle symbol. You will arrive at the Col du Luthier.

(8) Continue for about 200 metres before turning right onto the path with the same markings, which heads towards Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle.
Shortly afterwards, you arrive at the Chalet du Luthier. Carry on just a little further to the viewpoint.

(9) Start the return journey to the starting point (S/E).

Return via the same route to the Col du Stalon (7). From there, take a forest track on your right. At a junction with another forest track, do not take the one that continues over a bridge, but the one that branches off to the left (10).
At the next junction, at a place called Le Plain des Bœufs (11), continue to the left. When you reach the junction with theGR®533(12), take the path branching off to the right. Follow the same route as on the way out to return to Vieil Étang (3). From there, continue following the same signposts on your right.
This takes us back to our starting point (E).

It’s possible that the route has been updated recently, as an update was released last week. You may have downloaded the route before the update. That would solve the mystery, and the problem...

Daniel, I'm not sure we're talking about the same hike. The one we're discussing here

https://www.visorando.com/randonnee-le-ba...

doesn’t go via the Ballon de Servance car park

I can indeed see a trail marked with a Yellow Disc that ends north of the car park, but it isn’t part of this route

Hello,
This section runs from point 3 to the Ballon de Servance car park further south. It ensures the continuity of the path marked with Yellow Discs up to point 3 but not beyond. Furthermore, this section is not highlighted in purple on IGN maps
Kind regards
Daniel

Thank you for your feedback. Could you specify which section is off-limits?
As most of the routes taken are marked on the map, is it the track between (7) and (12)?

The route’s reliability is average, as I can’t understand how anyone could cross the military restricted areas around the Ballon de Servance, where entry is prohibited???

3-day trip:
Day 1: La Mer (70) -> Plancher-les-Mines
Day 2: Plancher les Mines -> Refuge de la Grande Goutte via the Planche des Belles Filles
Day 3: Refuge de la Grande Goutte -> Ballon de Servance -> Servance -> La Mer.
First hike completely on my own; heavy rucksack... nice, but exhausting...

A lovely walk to explore the Vosges forests.
The estimated time is quite a rough guide, though. Don’t be put off by the mud!
We did it over two days (no more than 2½ to 3 hours’ walking per day) with a very pleasant night’s stay at the top of the Ballon de Servance (the Cabane du Luthier, known as the Refuge Sailley). A wood-burning stove (still useful in early July...), a hatchet, a saw, toilet paper, hand sanitiser: everything you need!
These are mainly wide forest tracks, best tackled by mountain bike!

A lovely walk in fine weather. A real treat...
I would, however, recommend this walk to experienced walkers, not so much because of its difficulty but because of its length.

Hello,

My partner and I went on this hike, but unfortunately it rained the whole way, which meant we couldn’t really enjoy the route.
In fact, what should have been the highlight of the hike was completely obscured because the view was totally blocked by the mist. What’s more, as it rained for almost the entire walk, we couldn’t even enjoy the scenery!!!!
What a shame!!!
