Laveissiere - Meije Coste

Stage 1 of our Tour du Cantal / GR®400

First "glitch" of the route from Murat. It turns out that the GR®400 route has been changed due to right of way issues (from what we understand). So, instead of climbing from Murat up to the ridges and following them to the Bec de l'Aigle rock, we had to descend to the village of Laveissière and climb back up from La Bourgeade. We decided to start from Laveissière.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour du Cantal

Description of the walk

Leave your vehicle in the car park in front of the church in Laveissière.

(S/E) Continue behind the church along Rue du 19 mars 1962.

(1) Before reaching the housing estate, take the path on the left that follows the GR® trail, staying roughly level and parallel to the D439. Pass a waterfall and an old lime kiln before joining the departmental road (D439) at Fraisse Haut.

(2) Continue right on the road to cross the hamlet. About 100 metres before the N122, leave the road and take the path on the right that leads to La Bourgeade.

(3) The GR® climbs into the forest along a forest track, then a path to reach a crossroads at an altitude of 1,205 metres.

(4) Turn right along the Ruisseau de Pierre Taillade and climb increasingly steeply: pay attention to the markers so as not to lose your way, as there are quite a few trees and branches across the path. Continue to the edge of the woods, where it is advisable to take a break in the shade, as the next section will be exposed. You will reach a junction with a sign explaining the GR® detour: there is a beautiful view of the burons (stone huts) of Payre Gary de l'Or and the mountain pastures that you would have crossed.

(5) Continue straight ahead and cross the streams to climb up to the left and join the ridge.

(6) Follow this ridge to the Rocher du Bec de l'Aigle at an altitude of 1,699 metres.

(7) Continue to follow the GR® trail, which remains at the same altitude and passes directly below the Téton de Vénus: you can climb up from the recommended route, which avoids the damaged section.

(8) From there, the route descends gently to the fork in the paths at the Col de Rombière. Before reaching it, take the path on the left that leads to the Buron de Meije Coste (S/E).
