Rocher de Bonnevie in Murat

A short walk taking you to the Rocher de Bonnevie promontory and the impressive statue of the Virgin Mary, with a lovely 360° view over Murat, the Monts du Cantal and the hill on which the Saint-Antoine Chapel in Chastel-sur-Murat stands.

Description of the walk

To reach the start, follow the D3 for about 2 km from Murat and park in the car park on the left, alongside the D3 just before the roundabout.

(S/E) Cross the D3 and take the stony path on the other side of the road. Head right and, as you come out of the right-hand bend, take the path that climbs to the left. Follow this Way of the Cross to the summit of the Rocher de Bonnevie, where you’ll find the statue of the Virgin Mary.

(1) After taking in the view, return via the same route to the car park (S/E).

The climb was easy. The view of the town of Murat and its surroundings is lovely. For any mountain hike (especially here, but elsewhere too), it is important to wear suitable footwear. On the way back, we came across the fire brigade carrying a stretcher for a "tourist" who had dislocated his ankle while wearing sandals. A holiday ruined by carelessness.
