Stithians Dam Loop via Stithians Village

A loop walk, starting at the free car park by Stithians Dam. There is an option to start along the main road to Stithians, between (4) and (5), a bus route through Stithians.

The route follows made-up roads, country tracks, and designated footpaths, there are stiles, narrow gates and the need to climb over hedge steps.

Description of the walk

Start : Stithians Dam Car Park, What 3 Words (W3W)- inclines.reserve.sardine, (Postcode: TR3 7AW), Grid. ref. SW71994 363664

There is an option to start the route from the Watersports Centre W3W-stone.adventure.brass, Postcode (TR16 6NW). Grid Ref. SW70887 36993. Which would add an additional 1km to the route (handrail the water to meet the planned route).

(S/E) From the car park, head south along the service road for the water treatment works, pick up the track heading southeast.

(1) Follow the designated track down through the valley, the track will change to tarmac. Continue on the road upto the junction.

(2) Turn left at the junction, and follow the road (observing the highway code) to Tretheague Farm entrance. Cross the road and go through the kissing gate.

(3) Follow the designated footpath through the field and onto Crellow Road, turning left (north). Walk up through the village 1 km, past the church.

(4) By the church use the designated footpath and follow through farm fields 1km, to the hamlet of Trembroath. continue North 500m over bridge to road, turning left, proceed for 1 km.

(5) At the entrance to Treskewis Farm and the Bridleway. Follow the farm lane, passing the farm house on the left, and walking behind, picking up the track to a gate. The path proceeds over hedge stiles between fields for 2.5km, arriving at houses of Goonlaze. The path continues through the middle of the terrace of houses. Heading Southwest up the road for 750m.

(6) Turn right at the waymark and follow the designated route, 750m to the gate and the road. Turn left, after about 50m proceed through the mesh gate into the reservoir perimeter fence, 75m to the reservoir and turn left handrail the waters edge, on the path. (S/E)

3. Starting along any of the access points along the route, please park sensibly.

Note: This walk could be walked in either direction.

Dog policy: Dogs are permitted but must be kept under control.

Terrain :
Some parts of this walk are accessible for wheelchairs, however, the stile across the farmland section restrict the access, and some of the gates, would not permit the full circular route. Be mindful of the water's edge, near the Dam it gets very deep very quickly.

Transport :
There is an infrequent bus service/route, that passes the Water Sports Center; walkers will need to confirm the timings of the bus for drop off and allow sufficient time to walk the route. There is NO bus service to the Dam Car park.

  • Look out for the old hand water pumps, there are 2 to be found.
