Lago di Antrona - Saas-Almagell

You will walk along the two magnificent lakes of Antrona and Campliccioli. You will follow the Troncone torrent, and the climb to Alpe Saler, Alpe Cingino and Lago di Cingino will require some effort, but it will be well worth it. The setting is stunning, as the lake is located in the centre of a huge cirque. The climb to the Antronapass is pleasant and easy. The pass marks the border between Italy and Switzerland. The long descent to Furggu will take you to Saas Almagell for a well-deserved rest.

Description of the walk

Before setting off, see the Practical Information section.
Red and white SFT markings.

(S) From the Albergo Lagopinetta, go to the edge of Lago d'Antrona. Leave the small road and take the path on the right along the lake shore. Continue along the southern shore until you reach a fork indicating Lago di Campliccioli. Turn left and climb up to Alpe Piana.
(1) Continue along the path, crossing the road leading up to the dam several times. Stop about 50 metres before the dam.
(2) Head in the opposite direction to the dam on the path around the lake. After 150 metres and a hairpin bend, return to the lake. The path then overlooks the lake and follows the tracks of the old Decauville railway line, used to transport materials during the construction of the dam. Follow this old miniature railway line almost to the end of the lake. Then cross a small bridge over the Troncone torrent and you will soon reach Alpe Granarioli.
(3) Continue south-east, follow the Troncone stream on its left bank, pass Alpe Casaravera and reach a crossroads just before the confluence of the Rio Sangoria and the Troncone stream.

(4) Turn right towards Alpe Saler. Continue along this path, cross the Rio Sangoria and reach Alpe Cingino.

(5) Continue towards Lago Cingino, which is close to the Cingino bivouac and finally to Alpe del Lago.
(6) Follow the signs for Antronapass/Passo di Saas, heading west then north to return to Alpe de Corone.
(7) Climb the numerous hairpin bends towards Antronapass along a well-marked path. As you climb, enjoy the view of the great Cingino cirque.
(8) Enjoy the panoramic view of the 4,000-metre peaks of the Saas Valley. Begin the long descent towards Saas Almagell. Walk to Bitzinen and then to a junction near the Furggbach.
(9) At the intersection, stay on the right bank of the Furggbach and follow it to the Furggstalden ski lift station.

(10) From the station, take the Furggstaldenweg and come out onto Furggstaldenstrasse.
Cross the road and follow the final hairpin bends through the woods to the village of Saas Almagell.
When you reach the village, turn right onto Furusandstrasse and continue to the Hotel Monte-Moro (E).
