Access: from Annemasse (Geneva), take the A40 towards Chamonix; take exit 19 (Cluses centre). Signs for Flaine are visible from this point; then turn right onto the N205 towards Sallanches for 2 km, then left at the roundabout onto the D106 towards Flaine/Les Carroz. From Les Carroz, continue to Flaine where several car parks are available, including one free of charge.
(S/E) From the car park, head down the tarmac road to the right towards the Aup de Véran cable car station, then turn right, passing the Aujon and Bois ski lifts.
(1) Follow the stony track which climbs through the forest (regular signposting for the Belvédère d’Aujon). The slope steepens slightly before reaching the start of the Aujon ski lift.
(2) Shortly afterwards, leave the track and turn right (signposted) to climb gently up a cleared corridor before leaving the woodland; the Aujon chalets soon come into view. Go behind a chalet to climb a few metres up to the first sharp limestone pavement.
(3) The path disappears and you must continue by following the red markings on the rocks. Even in fine weather, watch your step! The route veers to the right before climbing more steeply. This is followed by a fairly steep section over the rocks, then a superb stretch through a magnificent sharp limestone pavement. To your left: the Aiguille d’Aujon and the Chapeau Gaspard; to your right, the Môle, the Pointe de Véret in the foreground, the Roc d’Enfer in the distance, to name but a few. Reach the Aujon viewpoint.
(4) The view is spectacular; the spot is dizzying, so do not get too close to the edge. To the right, the Pointe de Bornand awaits you; opposite, the Aravis range with the Pointe Percée and its most imposing slope. To our left, the grassy face of the Croix de Fer, the Aiguille d’Aujon and the Chapeau Gaspard
(4) From the Belvédère d’Aujon, head north, descending slightly, then following a faint path along the grassy slopes. Stay more or less level as you make your way along the cliffs (not too close!) to pass several rocky fissures and reach the foot of Pointe de Bornand. Reach the summit very quickly: the peak is 2,034 m high, the same altitude as the Belvédère d’Aujon. The cliffs are sheer, so take care.
(5) Retrace your steps back to the Belvédère d’Aujon.
(4) The return journey follows the same route back to the car park (S/E).
