Circular loop around Lac Noir from Pierre Giret

A varied hike through the Petit and Mercuel valleys to a rather secluded lake in the Alpes Grées.
No particular difficulties on this circular route of just over 12 km, ideal for spending a lovely day in the mountains away from the crowds.

Description of the walk

Park in the Pierre Giret car park, at the end of the road leading up from Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise.
You’ll pass some beautiful stone houses, but be careful as the road is narrow in places.

(S/E) Take the road towards the hamlet of La Savonne. Cross the bridge over the Torrent de la Loue Blanche. Continue until, just before the hamlet, you reach a crossroads with a signpost.

(1) Turn left onto the path that climbs northwards towards the Refuge du Ruitor. You will soon reach another crossroads.

(2) Take the path on the right, still heading towards the refuge. Continue until you reach the track, where you will find a wooden sign.

(3) Take the path on the left, following the sign: Refuge du Ruitor via the path. Descend onto the main track. Reach the hamlet of Les Mollettes and then the Chapelle Saint-Pierre.

(4) Continue across the field to the bridge. Cross the Ruisseau de la Sassiere upstream of the reservoir. Continue the climb, heading eastwards. Cross a few small streams to reach the Ruisseau de l'Aïvettaz.

(5) Follow its left bank and continue the ascent, which ends at the Col de Montséti.

(6) Follow the large red markings, or, as shown on this map, follow the ridge line to reach Lac Noir.

(7) Then begin the descent, which is a little steep, and reach a crossroads of paths.

(8) Here you have two options:
- turn right and walk through the Vallon de Mercuel to reach the crossroads in the hamlet of Bochet,
- stay on the left-hand path (marked) and, via a steep descent marked with red signs, reach the Refuge de l'Archeboc in the hamlet of La Motte.

(9) Turn right onto the wide track and head for the hamlet of Bochet.

(10) Continue straight ahead, pass the hamlet of Les Côtes, then, taking the track on the right, follow a hairpin bend to reach a crossroads with signposted paths.

(11) Take this path on the right, following an easy descent through the woods, and at the bottom of the descent you will reach another Y-shaped junction.

(12) Continue straight ahead and, after a gentle climb, reach the Torrent de la Sassière. Cross it via the footbridge and, a few metres further on, you will find the initial junction you passed on the way out.

(1) Turn left and, following the route in reverse to the one taken on the way there, return to the Pierre Griet car park (S/E).

Notes

There are no signposts on part of the route, but the path is clearly marked.
Snow may remain early in the season and obscure the path leading up to the Col de Montséti.
Between (8) and (9), take care when crossing the streams if you are passing through in the afternoon, as the flow is strong.

Worth a visit

Beautiful views of the surrounding peaks throughout the route: Mont Pourri at the start, the Bec de l’Âne and Bec du Lac and their glacial remnants once you reach Lac Noir.
Varied landscapes and a mountain atmosphere guaranteed; we only passed one other person between the Refuge du Ruitor and the finish on this Friday in July.
(7) Lac Noir: option to climb to the summit of Louprama.
A few marmots on the descent into the Vallon de Mercuel.

A beautiful circular under a clear blue sky. On the way up, we passed by the Ruitor refuge, but it was already closed (as was the Archeboc refuge on the way down). A few more sheep were safely penned in, and the sheepdogs were calm.
We didn't see any chamois, but we heard two gunshots in the distance towards Lac du Petit.
We left the car in the large car park next to the EDF power station, 300 m before the P.Giret car park, thinking we would return directly to the car from point 12, but crossing the mini-dam is prohibited (it is possible to cross a little further down).

A lovely walk. No significant difficulties. The path climbs gradually. The descent towards L'Archeboc is a bit steep in places. The route is diverted just before returning to Pierre Giret due to a damaged footbridge.

A hike with the return route through the pretty Mercuel valley.
The climb up to the pass overlooking the lake is a bit steep, but the view is well worth it, particularly of Mont Pourri.
The descent can be taken via two routes, one of which—the longer route marked with red paint—passes by the Archeboc refuge. The shorter path overlooks the valley.
Note that this hike is featured in the Rother Vanoise guide under the title ‘Tour du Montséti’.

A lovely walk with stunning views. It starts off quite steeply with a climb up to the pass. Once over the pass, Lac Noir comes into view below, followed by a gentle descent where you’ll spot several marmots. The final stretch through the forest back to the car park is less interesting. Trekking poles are definitely worth bringing.
