Lac du Lauvitel

A nice little circular loop in the Écrins National Park, to Lac du Lauvitel, from the Ougiers car park. The hike can start from La Danchère, but in August 2024 the road was closed due to a landslide in June. The ascent is via Les Selles and the descent via Les Rousses. It is a mountain trail, much of which runs through forest, so it is shaded, which is useful in hot weather. The trail is mostly paved with old stones and there are small bridges to cross.

Description of the walk

Park at the Ougiers car park: you can park at La Danchère when the road is open, which shortens the journey a little.

(S/E) Carefully follow the departmental road to the bridge over the Vénéon. Cross it and continue for a good hundred metres on the road leading to La Danchère.

(1) Take the path on the left which leads directly to Les Escallons and serves as a shortcut. Climb the stairs to rejoin the road, cross over and take the path opposite. You will reach the hamlet of La Danchère at the chapel.

(2) Continue straight ahead to cross the hamlet and continue on the left once you have left it. Start the climb, pass a footbridge on the right and reach a fork just after crossing the stream.

(3) Take the path on the left and continue climbing along the Ruisseau du Lauvitel to reach the lake at a fork.

(4) Head right towards the two buildings, leave them on your right and follow the rocky path that runs along the northern shore of the lake and leads to an intersection.

(5) Leave the path leading to Lac du Plan Vianney on your left and continue straight ahead to quickly begin the descent. You will come back to the fork you passed on the way up.

(3) Turn left and retrace your steps to descend to the bridge over the Vénéon and then to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The route is very well marked, just follow the signs. The path runs alongside the Lauvitel stream and is very pleasant.

The trail is relatively busy and climbs steeply, but it remains very accessible and easy, except for the effort required to climb the hill. We came across many families with children.

You can camp and/or swim at Lac du Lauvitel (4).

(2) La Danchère has places to eat and/or have a drink.
