Loop in the Écrins National Park. Tour of the Aiguille de Venosc via the Lauvitel and Muzelle lakes, then the Vénéon Valley.
A rich and varied itinerary! It is relatively long. It can be done in two days by spending a night at the Refuge de la Muzelle or bivouacking near the refuge.

Description of the walk

The hike starts from La Danchère. Parking is available in the centre of the hamlet. The route is very well marked, with numerous signs at the main intersections. The first part of the route is very busy in summer, up to Lac du Lauvitel.

(S/E) Turn left towards the chapel, then turn left twice to follow the path that runs almost parallel to the GR®54. You will easily reach Lac du Lauvitel.

(1) Continue left on the GR®54 towards Col du Vallon. The trail climbs very quickly above the lake. Some sections are exposed and secured by cables but do not present any technical difficulties. Reach Col du Vallon.

(2) Still on the GR®54, begin the descent towards Lac de la Muzelle. This descent involves numerous steep hairpin bends. Reach Lac de la Muzelle.

(3) Leave the GR®54 and turn left onto the GR®54C towards the Refuge de la Muzelle, which can be reached very quickly by walking along the lake.

(4) From the refuge, continue on the GR®54C towards Vénosc. A short climb takes you to the start of the descent towards the Vénéon. Continue the descent on the left bank of the Pisse stream to reach an Arbre Sec.

(5) Continue the descent, walking alongside a beautiful waterfall after Les Côtes before reaching the bridge leading to the hamlet of L'Alleau.

(6) Initially, the route continued along the left bank of the Vénéon, but landslides have made this option impracticable (info from summer 2025). To bypass these landslide areas, the route has been modified as follows: cross the Villeneuve stream via the bridge, then cross the hamlet of Alleau. After the hamlet, on the left, another bridge allows you to cross the Vénéon and reach Bourg d'Arud. Cross Bourg d'Arud.

(7) On leaving Bourg d'Arud, at the car park, take Chemin de la Pointe on the left, which will take you to the GR®54C, which runs along the right bank of the Vénéon.

(8) Leave the GR®54C and turn left, passing through Les Escallons, to reach the (S/E).

A fantastic route. We set off from La Danchère at 1pm on Saturday 27th and arrived at Lac de la Muzelle at 8pm sharp to spend the night there

The difficulty lies in the fact that the first day is all uphill and the next day is all downhill. There are a few small sections where you have to do a bit of climbing, so with heavy rucksacks it's a bit more difficult, but the scenery is breathtaking!
On the way back, we passed through two or three rockfalls that had been re-marked after Venosc to reach La Danchère

very pretty route, but very busy!
i did it over two days, camping above Lake Lauvitel (I climbed up towards Lake Plan Vianney to avoid the crowds). I set off from Bourg d'Arud (point 7), which avoids long kilometres at the end of the route! But I did it in the direction indicated. About halfway between points 7 and 8, the path crosses the river again and goes along the left bank, but the signposting is very clear.

Trip taken on 30 and 31 August 2025. Not overcrowded.
Day 1: The climb to the Col du Vallon offers superb views of Lake Lauvitel. The sections with cables are not too difficult. The descent to Lake Muzelle is fairly easy.
Day 2: Beautiful descent to Alleau. Centuryspine's message is very comprehensive about the new bypass. My additions: On the first part, there are 3 or 4 sections with tree trunks across the path. Nothing insurmountable. On the second part, after the footbridge, there are 2 detours around rockfalls which are not very pleasant (steep slopes and unstable path).

Fair on the weekend of 30 August 2025.
I left from Venosc rather than La Danchere because I wanted to do the via ferrata the day after the descent. This allowed me to test the section between Venosc and La Danchere, which has just been partially rebuilt.
Just after the car park for the cable cars in Bourg d'Arud, 50 metres to the left, a track descends into a field, and there, just to the left, well hidden, a small dirt track begins, which descends before running alongside the Veneon. It's quite chaotic, going up a bit into the woods, with quite a few trees across the path, but it's passable. You then come back onto a semi-concrete track. Continuing on, you arrive at a rest area with a bridge crossing the Veneon and signs clearly indicating the Lauvitell via La Danchere. Cross the stream and take the path. From there, follow the yellow dots marked with spray paint to reach La Danchere. It can be a bit tricky at times, but it's passable without any real danger.

Otherwise, it's a crazy route, but beware, the double climb up Lauvitel and then the Col du Vallon is really tough! You need to be fit and prepared...

Hello,

Gamelis, if the route has been changed since the day of my bivouac, that makes things easier for the next people who want to do the hike.

Thank you for providing this useful information.

Hello,
Thanks to Fabio3869 for the information about the impassable bridge.
I have modified the route again, taking it through Bourg d'Arud and moving point 7

Two-day bivouac with overnight stay in tents at Lake Muzelle, exceptional views,
Difficult hike, handrails, 1,600 metres of elevation gain on the first day to the pass.
The time indicated is too optimistic (especially with a 15kg backpack), allow around 7 hours on the first day to reach the refuge
End of the route changed due to a rockfall
You have to cross the bridge to follow the road. We found a path to get back to the car park, but it was quite difficult
A beautiful hike but not for amateurs

Hello,

I completed this tour on the weekend of 23-24 August 2025.
I can confirm that point 7 is impassable as part of the bridge has been washed away by a landslide.
See the two photos added today (bridge + detour)

#### Modification of the route carried out thanks to the Visorando team
Kind regards

Hello, AmoureuxDuRiz. The route was modified on the map and in the description several days ago. Everything should now be OK, and the proposed route no longer passes through any dangerous or impassable areas, even between the current points 6 and 8 (crossing to the other side of the Véneon on the GR54C)

A hike with several levels of difficulty and breathtaking views. Each landscape is more varied than the last.

A fairly easy route to follow, but be careful between points 6 and 8, where a landslide has made the terrain IMPASSABLE!

Hike completed this weekend. There were lots of people at Lauvitel Lake and along the rest of the trail in the opposite direction.
The modified route is great! I would like to point out that, depending on the weather, it is possible to cross the last bridge and rejoin the route through the woods so you can stay in the forest for the last few metres! (Follow the sign before the bridge that says Lac du Lauvitel)

WARNING: Contrary to some information, the path between L'Alleau and La Donchère is IMPASSABLE and very dangerous. Do not cross the opposite slope from Venosc either, as the path is very dangerous.
You must follow the road or plan to leave one car at La Donchère and one at Alleau.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the fact that the route as described is no longer passable between points 6 and 8.
As the author of this guide, I would like to modify the route.

Can any of you tell me exactly what the alternative route is to get back to La Danchère? Thank you

In the meantime, I have indicated on the guide that the route is not passable between points 6 and 8

Have a good evening
