Park in the Chenal car park.
(S/E) Head up the road, where traffic is regulated.
(1) At the second hairpin bend, let the track to the left towards Combaz and Monal pass you by. Continue climbing to the right to reach the hamlet of Le Fenil.
(2) Stay on the main track and enter the larch forest. You’ll reach a junction at La Legettaz.
(3) Let a track leading down to the left towards Monal pass you by and continue climbing along the track, which includes a few fairly steep sections.
(4) As you climb, pass the path on your left which descends towards Monal – you’ll take this on the way back.
Continue the ascent up a steep slope, followed by a level stretch overlooking the Clou valley; take a well-marked shortcut (cairn) to cut across a bend in the track. Return to the track, then leave it shortly afterwards to take a grassy path on the left towards the ruins of the Saint-Jacques Chapel. From the chapel, descend towards the foot of the dam.
(5) Cross the bridge and head back up towards the buildings at Le Clou, continuing to the left of the buildings. The track gives way to a steep path leading to Lac du Clou.
(6) Walk round the lake on the right, ignoring the paths branching off to the right, and head up to a path situated significantly higher up.
(7) Turn right onto the path and follow it for some time; it will gradually gain a little height. It is marked by a few cairns and some faded white-and-yellow paint marks.
NB: there are numerous tracks in this area; stay on the one that is most clearly marked. As you approach the Lacs Verdet stream, the tracks head north (do not cross the stream but climb up the slope to reach the lakes).
(8) From the lakes, head back down via the route you took on the way up until you reach the junction with the path leading down to Le Monal.
(4) Take the path on the right and descend to the hamlet of Monal (it is also possible to take the track on the right further down, at (3), which leads down to the hamlet).
(9) On leaving the hamlet, take a small path on the left, ignoring the track ahead leading towards L’Échaillon. The path is initially flat, then descends to reach the hamlet of La Combaz.
(10) In the hamlet, follow the track heading south.
(1) At the hairpin bend, carry on straight ahead to descend back to the car park (S/E).
