Lac de l’Ascension and Lacs Escur

A challenging hike around the Torrent de l’Ascension and its three lakes. Much of the route is through woodland, and therefore in the shade in summer. Outside the forest, you’ll discover dizzying and breathtaking landscapes. At Lac de l’Ascension, you’ll find marmots and flocks of sheep.

Description of the walk

Park at Plan de la Loubière, just before the ford.

(S/E) Cross the ford and walk gently up the road opposite, which passes above the houses. Reach a junction at a place called Le Giet.

(1) Look out for the path on the right coming from the lakes, which you’ll take on the way back, and carry on straight along the road. You’ll reach a three-way junction in the Bois du Puy.

(2) Continue straight on, still climbing, until you reach a large earthen esplanade.

(3) Ignore the two tracks and take the path that descends to the left, below. Leave the forest and join a path coming from the left, directly from the Roche de Rame

(4) Take the path on the right and start climbing back up along the Torrent de l'Ascension, following a series of very steep hairpin bends.

(5) At this point, the climb becomes less steep. Continue straight on to reach Lac de l'Ascension, the largest of the three.

(6) Go round it on the right and climb up to reach Lac Escur.

(7) Go round this lake to the right: if there is a flock of sheep on the right, it is best to go round them on the left as shown on the route map, to avoid the sheepdogs. Head for Petit Lac Escur.

(8) Climb up the right-hand slope to reach the Collet du Peyron, which can be seen in the distance.

(9) Head back down following the path.

(10) Go round the Ravin de la Fonte des Ardouis on the right and continue down the path, which soon enters the forest.

(11) From here, the descent is less pleasant. Rather than taking the large, rutted path, take the smaller one on the left, which is more pleasant, and return to the junction you passed at the start at Le Giet.

(1) Continue down to the left to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

This hike is the short route to visit the lakes: from La Roche de Rame, drive up to the Gué du Lauzet (allow an hour’s drive) and then start the hike above the ford. The path is well marked in yellow.

You can also start from La Roche de Rame, from the car park at the Rocher Gero climbing site, but that’s a different matter altogether, and we would tend to recommend camping at Lac de l’Ascension.

(6) You can also cut across country and head up to the peak with an altitude of 2,372 m: a very lovely view of both lakes.
