The road bike route starts at the trestle bridge over pit 11/19, on an old railway line (the rails are embedded in the ground), which was used for wagons filled with coal. There are a few replicas, which have been converted into rest areas or picnic spots. After 9 kilometres, you find yourself on a towpath along the Deûle Canal. This makes for a varied, fairly easy route with a few gentle slopes.
