The 80 slag heap (Garennes Pont Ampère) along La Souchez

This route will take you to the top of the flat 80 slag heap (shaped like a plateau), offering a beautiful view of the mining basin and the Artois hills. The rest of the route follows the course of the Souchez river in a green and peaceful setting.

Description of the walk

Car park near the bridge over the Souchez, 298 Rue du Percot, Liévin.

(S) From the car park, cross the Souchez river, then take the path on the left that runs parallel to the cycle path.
Follow the cycle path westwards to the intersection, then go straight on and follow the Souchez (on your left).
Follow the path for about 500 metres.

(1) Turn right, almost in the opposite direction, onto a small hairpin path that climbs gently uphill.
When climbing slag heap 80, the path splits. Stay on the path on the side of the slag heap, which continues to climb gently, keeping the Souchez below in view.

(2) At the top, take the path on the left to stay on the plateau.
A few dozen metres further on, you can enjoy a new viewpoint on a small plateau.
At the end of the plateau, take the path on the right to descend the slag heap, continue straight ahead, then further on at the crossroads, take a path on the right to complete the descent of the slag heap.
When you reach the houses, continue straight ahead (with the houses on your left) to arrive at the edge of Rue du Percot.

(3) There is a path running alongside Rue du Percot on your right, but it is not very passable, so I recommend catching up with Rue du Percot and turning right (south).

(S) Pass the cycle path and, once you are almost back at the starting point, turn left (east) onto the path following the Souchez.
Follow the Souchez for over 1 km until you reach Rue Henri d'Arras.

(4) Cross Rue Henri d'Arras (be careful, this is a busy street), enter the park in front of you, continue straight ahead and go around the pond on the right (pond on your left).
You will then rejoin the Souchez, which you follow for about 100 metres until you reach a car park.
Turn left and head back in the other direction, south-west, but on the path along the other bank of the Souchez (the river on your left this time).
Follow the Souchez for about 300 metres.

(5) Turn right onto a staircase and, a few dozen metres further on, turn left onto the cycle path (shared with pedestrians).
A few metres further on, cross Rue Henri d'Arras and stay on the cycle path (Bassin Minier cycle route).

(6) About 50 metres after Rue d'Arras, turn slightly to your left, leave the cycle path and take a small path. A little further on, at the intersection, turn slightly to your right.
The path leads into the woods of slag heap 80A. Continue straight ahead for less than 1 km until you reach La Souchez and the starting point. Continue straight ahead to return to the car park (E).

You are on UNESCO World Heritage sites, so take your rubbish with you, observe but do not disturb the flora and fauna that are so unique to the mining basin.

Bring binoculars and a camera for the viewpoints.

You are in a historic place, so respect its memory and discover traces of the past.

Worth a visit

If you want to join the "UNESCO Slope Challenge" (51 slopes to climb) or just for fun, you can take a selfie at the top of the slope and share it with #terrilmania and @terrilmania on Instagram or by email at defiterril@gmail.com.

You can also add your stone to the cairn (pile of stones) at the top of the slag heap and mark your visit to the summit forever.

Sometimes we hesitate a little about the route, not because it is poorly marked, but because the vegetation has grown so much that some paths are hidden. We only realise afterwards on our phones that we are on a parallel path but not on the path described at the start.

At the extreme tip between points 2 and 3, we had to find an alternative, as the path was completely blocked by brambles. Incidentally, I won't tell you that, as a result of our stubbornness, we felt like we had been attacked by a gang of aggressive cats.

Otherwise, the landscape is bewildering; you don't feel like you're in the city at all, and the area is quite bucolic. The walk could be really nice if the paths were better maintained.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful experience.

I won't say the same thing as everyone else. As soon as you start climbing the slag heap (very flat but clearly indicated in the description, except that I was expecting more open landscapes because you feel quite enclosed/surrounded by the vegetation nearby or a little further away), you are invaded in many places by brambles or very dense vegetation. It's a shame that the path isn't maintained.
So, the start is very good, but the middle and end of the route are so-so.
It doesn't look like it's maintained, judging by the other comments.
Even if you don't follow the route, it's impossible to get lost.

A magnificent discovery of the slag heap and La Souchez. Be careful at point 2, as the last path down is well hidden and obstructed by vegetation!

I loved this walk, thank you very much!
It was full of charm, with wind and sunny spells that really enhanced the setting, and after a storm that inevitably brought out the vegetation and La Souchez, which had a substantial flow!
The track on the app helped me find my way back at one point on the slag heap, despite thorny branches that had hidden the access point in a place that was really invisible!
So, a really pleasant route with lots of different landscapes. Great!

It was a pleasant surprise to discover this beautiful, very green route, much of which runs alongside the water.
No particular problems on the slag heap.

Hello,

I think I know what this organisation's response would be.
For my part, I would advise the walkers in the association of which I am a member not to walk near these fumaroles, which I invite you to check the existence and significance of so that, if necessary, you can correct the route you have proposed.
I believe this is your responsibility.
This does not change our very favourable opinion of the route.

A clarification regarding the location of the fumaroles: between points 2 and 3 on the map, at the western tip above the R of Mont Garennes.

Kind regards

Hello,

To tell you the truth, when I did this route, there were no fumaroles. I recommend you get closer to the slag heap chain, as they can often provide more assistance.

A very beautiful route that we didn't know about, even though we regularly walk nearby.
Woods and a river in the middle of an urban area.
We had some difficulty finding our way around the map. Which is quite normal given the environment.
It's very easy to get confused when you don't know the area.
We missed a path that branches off to the right (adding a little detour) because we were distracted by fumaroles escaping from the slag heap, which hid the path we needed to take.
We don't know if the fumaroles from the Garennes slag heap are dangerous.
Can the author of the route reassure us?
Apart from that, it was a great little hike. Perhaps it's best to avoid the area around these fumaroles?
