The Viosne Valley around Santeuil

This hike through woods and fields offers beautiful views of the Viosne Valley, a small river that flows through the Vexin Français from north to south, with interesting heritage in the village of Brignancourt and a possible stop at the edge of a beautiful pond.

Description of the walk

Starting point and access: Santeuil-Le Perchay station.
- Transilien - Line J, on the section between Paris-Saint-Lazare and Gisors.
The hike starts on the platform side in the direction of Paris to Gisors (if arriving in the opposite direction, cross the tracks at the level crossing).

Yellow + red and white markings

(S/E) Head south-west, i.e. away from the village of Santeuil. After about 100 metres, at a crossroads, turn left onto the D51 towards Le Perchay. Continue downhill, ignore a dead end on the left, leave Santeuil and cross a stream.

Yellow signposting

(1) At the intersection, turn left towards Us. Follow the small road slightly uphill and, at the top, ignore the turn-off to the right towards Cornouiller. Continue on the road, heading south-east and more or less flat, for a good kilometre.

Yellow + red and white signposts

(2) At the crossroads, turn left at an acute angle into Rue Léon Kersaint. Go downhill, cross the railway line at the level crossing and cross the Viosne. Go back up, pass a few beautiful houses and turn left with the road.

(3) At a fork (forest barrier on the right), take the tarmac road on the left, which quickly turns into a dirt track with a fence on the left. Enter the woods and ignore a vague path on the right. At a three-way junction, follow the path opposite which climbs into the woods. Continue on flat ground then descend steadily. At the bottom, the path turns left, crosses a short wet section, turns left again and climbs back up.

(4) As you leave the woods, climb more gently with a hedge on your right. Follow the Bois de l'Église on your right, then descend between fenced meadows.

(5) At the bottom of the descent, turn right: be careful not to take thefirst path on the right, which leads to a farm, but the second one, which is parallel to it at the beginning and runs along the edge of a field on your left and a hedge on your right. Climb between the fields, follow a wood on your right for a short distance (note the arrow indicating the next crossroads) and reach the edge of the Bois des Mares.

(6) At the crossroads, turn left at an acute angle and go downhill, first along the edge of the woods on your right, then between the fields. At the bottom, at a fork, turn right. Cross a small road and continue on the path opposite, with a high hedge on your left, then between the fields.

Yellow markings
TwoPR® trails intersect at this point; do not follow the one that branches off to the right with theGR®1. On the section up to the next crossing point, the markings consist of an arrow at the start and a yellow cross at the entrance to Brignancourt.

(7) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead on the D159 towards Brignancourt. Just before the sign for the village, pass behind the iron cross located high up on the right-hand side of the road and follow a path through the woods on the left. With a fence on your right, keep heading north-northwest and ignore the paths on the left. Pass a reservoir on your left and continue along the grassy path between two fences.

Yellow + red and white markings

(8) At the end of the path, rejoin theGR®1and turn left downhill onto Chemin de Marines. Walk alongside the town hall on your left until you reach a triangular square (Place des Tilleuls).

No markings

Then turn right. At the next crossroads, turn left onto Rue de l'Église, walk alongside the church and you will find the entrance on your right.

(9) Return to the crossroads and follow Rue du Moulin. Then walk along Place de Tilleuls on your left.

Yellow + red and white signposts

At the corner of the square, turn right and follow the D159 towards Commeny and Moussy. Note a wash house on the right and cross the Viosne. Cross the railway line at the level crossing and turn right onto the road that goes uphill.

Yellow markings

(10) At a fork (forest barrier), leave theGR®1trail on your right, continue up the road and pass a small cross on your right. Be careful, the left turn that follows is tight and the left side of the road is extremely narrow: for your own safety, it is bestto walk on the right-hand side, which is wider and offers better visibility. Continue along the road, between the fields and then along the edge of the woods on your right.

(11) At a right-hand bend, leave the road and take a wide path on the left. Walk south-east along the edge of the woods and then the hedge on your right.

(12) At the end of the hedge (signpost), follow thePR® JC4 on the right along a grassy path that soon descends between the fields. At the bottom, turn left and follow the Étang de Vallière on your right.

(13) At the pond car park, follow a small road to the left. Cross the hamlet of Vallière and come out onto the D51. Follow this road downhill to the left. Ignore the yellow arrow that invites you to turn right onto a path that enters a wood and continue on the tarmac road.

Yellow + red and white markings

(1) At the intersection you took on the way there, continue straight ahead on the D51. At the next crossroads, turn right and you will quickly reach the station (S/E).

Hike completed by a group of eight people. Very pleasant and fairly easy route. Lots of flowers along the way. Quite a bit of road but very little traffic. Everyone loved this beautiful route.
A few comments:
at point 2, specify that you need to turn left just after the US exit sign (visible from a distance).
At point 8, Place des Tilleuls, there is a picnic table under a gazebo and a water point right next to it, which is worth mentioning. (It probably didn't exist when the route was created.)

A pleasant walk despite the damp weather. We went as far as the priory in Moussy. A 17-kilometre round trip.

pleasant hike through fields, well-described route that is easy to follow, the paved sections are a bit long (but we were warned about this in the description), and the Lac de la Vallière is indeed a beautiful spot
thanks to the author for sharing this

A pleasant and varied walk, but best avoided in hot weather as it is often exposed in the fields. The map was sufficient for us to complete the loop, to which we added a detour north of Brignancourt to the Noisemont mill (see walk 2730403). As indicated in the description, the sections on the road are less pleasant.

A beautiful hike that started in the cool morning and ended in the sunshine. Perfect description, picnic on the banks of the Vallières pond in a relaxing and bucolic setting. The only downside was the nearly three-hour wait at the Santeuil-Le Perchay station, but even that was very pleasant, with a green area by a stream to wait in

Very beautiful hike. The only downside was the two sections on the road without a pavement, which were a bit long.

A fairly pleasant walk but not particularly interesting. Thank you for the very clear route description. It's impossible to get lost! However, it's a shame that the paths through the fields aren't maintained a bit better, especially at point (6) where you can barely see the trail: the grass is very tall, so watch your ankles because you can't see where you're stepping. It's best to do this hike in dry weather.
However, it was a lovely surprise to discover the Vallières pond, which unfortunately you can't walk around.

A very pleasant walk through fields and woods, ending at a beautiful pond. There are some sections on paved roads, but we didn't find them bothersome as there were very few cars. Thank you for the detailed directions in the description, we appreciated it!

A pleasant, shaded, and easy hiking loop.
You can picnic on the banks of the Vallière pond.
Worth doing again this summer. In very hot weather, bring water and a good hat.

Very well-written description. The hike was easier than advertised, with a lot of walking in fields. Bring plenty of water to withstand the strong sun.
A bit too much tarmac for my liking.
