the Verrerie peat bog

This lovely loop allows us to discover a section of the watershed on the heights of Burzet, at an altitude of 1,300 metres, which is very pleasant in summer when the valley is stifling. Along the way, we will discover a peat bog with the ruins of an old glassworks and the remains of a Strombolian crater.

Description of the walk

At a place called La Brousse, park along the small road leading from the GR®7 towards La Verrerie. The trail starts on the GR®7 (red and white markings) and recent signs also indicate "Boucle de la Verrerie".

(S/E) Follow the GR® and the signs for "Boucle de la Verrerie" heading due west.

(1) At the fork, follow the track on the left (red and white markings).

(2) Ignore a path on the left (the return path). About 20 metres further on, ignore the path on the right, which you will take on your return from the small loop in the peat bog. Continue straight ahead. Pass the Ouroboros (sculpture) with its explanatory sign.

(3) Small loop in the peat bog: keep left.

(4) Ruins of the old glassworks. Turn right and return to the junction of the short loop.

(3) Retrace your steps, pass the Ouroboros again and take the path on the left and the GR®7 marked in red and white. This path is in poor condition (forestry work and water erosion).

(5) When you reach a small road, cross the bridge over the Ruisseau de Prat Sauvage and follow the path on the right (GR®) 150 m further on. You will come to a multiple crossroads.

(6) Continue straight ahead on the GR®7 (red and white markings).

(7) Cross the road. Opposite, the trail enters the crater of the volcano, with a view of the Vestide du Pal on the left. Continue straight ahead and join the D356 at La Fontaulière.

(8) Immediately turn left onto the small road that leads to the hamlet of Le Pal. Cross the hamlet.

(9) At the crossroads with a cross, continue on the track that climbs to the left, still following the red and white markings, gradually ascending through the pine woods.

(10) Turn right towards Les Oulettes. In the bend, leave the road and take a dirt track on the left.

(11) Pay attention at this intersection: there are no more markings, so leave the well-marked path and take the path on the right. After about 20 metres, keep to the right again. The path is not maintained (grass and heather).

(12) At the end of the path: panoramic view of the Burzet valley. Retrace your steps for 50 m,then take the path on the right.

(13) At the crossroads, follow the path on the right.Further on, you will rejoin the path you took at the start.

(2) Retrace your steps to return to La Brousse (S/E).

Notes

Along the route, you will find the "Ouroboros" sculpture by Brazilian artist Henrique Oliveira, located on the edge of the peat bog, created in 2023 to enhance the watershed trail.

A glassworks was established on the site of the peat bog in the 17th century to revive economic activity after the Wars of Religion. Some ruins can still be seen today.

La Vestide du Pal is a huge maar. After its formation, small slag cones were added and emerged from the caldera

It is an ancient crater with a diameter of approximately 1,700 metres. The knoll du Pal is only the highest point of the ridge surrounding the caldera. To the south-west is a breach through which the Fontaulière escapes.

A magnificent autumn hike with colourful leaves, not very difficult as there is little elevation gain and the trails are in good condition.

Thanks for the idea. As we know the Vestide du Pal well, we only did the Verrerie-Tourbière-Ouroboros route (1 to 4) and then cut across to Champclause via the southbound trail after the Verrerie (11 to 14).
A very varied environment, nature, history and art... and porcini mushrooms! And not a soul in sight on this late summer Friday...
