Ray Pic waterfalls starting from Péreyres

The volcanic natural site of the Cascades du Ray Pic was classified as a natural site in 1931.
The Bourges river springs from the middle of the basalt flows and falls from a height of about 60 m.
The proximity of various streams provides a certain coolness and even the opportunity to bathe.

Description of the walk

To get to the start, coming from Burzet, leave your car in the car park specially provided for hikers, on the side of the road between the hamlet of Le Chambon and Péreyres.

(S/E) Cross the road and take the path opposite the car park, which climbs towards the village of Péreyres. At the top of the path, cross the road again and take the stairs leading to the church. Go around the church on the right and take another set of stairs to reach Rue de la Mairie. Continue left along this street until you reach the edge of the village, then continue along a path for a few metres.

(1) At the fork, take the shaded path on the right (GRP® de la Haute Cévenne d'Ardèche - yellow and red markings) which winds its way above the La Bourges river. Cross the Ruisseau de l'Ufernet via a wooden bridge, then a few fords using large stones, and join the Ray Pic road (D215).

(2) Turn left, follow the D215 road, pass the hamlet of Le Chabron and continue along the road until you reach the entrance to a bridge over the La Bourges river.

(3) Leave theGRP® trail, which branches off to the left, and cross the bridge over La Bourges.
You can swim in the Ruisseau du Pas de Fer waterfall before crossing the bridge.

(4) At the end of the bridge, immediately turn left onto a path that climbs steeply up the mountainside (yellow markings) to join the road at the entrance to the Cascades du Ray Pic site.

(5) Enter the Cascades du Ray Pic site and continue along the path (numerous steps). On the way, stop at the viewpoint on the left.

(6) Ignore the path that descends to the left (which you will take on the way back) and continue to the upper viewpoint.

(7) At the upper viewpoint, admire the main waterfall, then turn back to the previous fork.

(6) Take the path down to the right and head to the lower viewpoint.

(8) From the lower viewpoint, admire the main waterfall up close, as well as the secondary waterfall on the right.
Return to the car park by following the same route in reverse (S/E).

Due to bad weather, we went straight to the entrance of the Ray Pic site. We didn't miss much because it was an uninteresting stretch of road. The waterfall is truly magnificent, and in October, it's not very crowded, which is nice. Be careful, as the ground is slippery when it rains, and there are many steps.

The start of the hike through the woods from the Péreyres car park is good, but the road section is too long and uninteresting. The climb up to the car park at the waterfall site is also steep and not very pleasant. However, the site itself is worth the detour.

Very well marked route, ideal in hot weather as it is shaded for most of the way, easy for experienced walkers.
Caution is advised for people with knee replacements as the stairs put a lot of strain on the knees.
On the way back, you will receive a very warm welcome at the snack bar.

A pleasant walk to do in warm weather as it is very shady. On the way back, take care if you have weak knees as the slope is quite steep. Alternatively, you can return by road.

The path to the waterfall is very well signposted from the car park, as indicated on Visorando.
It took us less than the 3 hours and 20 minutes mentioned, and we didn't meet anyone else on the trail that Sunday.
The waterfall is truly magnificent. The climb is a bit tough for non-hikers, but it's definitely worth it.
It is essential to follow the instructions on this listed site.
