On the watershed, from Suc de la Pise to Sagnes and Goudoulet, which are peatlands

A varied route, taking in shaded woods and wide open spaces. Best done in spring for the flowers, in summer for the cool air, and in autumn for the colours of the beech trees and the mushrooms.

The paths are easy and signposted almost all the way, but be careful: a ford at La Cabanette can be tricky to cross if the water level is high.

Description of the walk

Start on the D289 at the Col de la Baricaude. To the west of the road, a widening provides space to park, leaving the farm track that branches off at this point clear.

(S/E) Cross the road, take a wide track opposite, and follow the GR®7 signposts. Pass the summit of the knoll of the Pise, and continue to the Panlon signpost.

(1) Continue straight ahead on the GR® for 700 m, then leave it and take a wide track on the right.

(2) Cross a track and continue straight ahead along a grassy track. GRP® signposting is barely visible. Pass the start of the GRP® trail on your right, which leads off via a footpath, and continue along the same track until you reach a tarmac road at an elevation of 1268.

(3) Turn left and continue to the four-way junction.

(4) Turn left and continue to the village.

(5) Carry on straight ahead, cross the D289 (Grand-Rue), and continue straight ahead for a few metres.

(6) At the start of Rue des Écoles, take the path on the right. Head down to the bridge over the Padelle, and continue along the GR®7 (marked in white and red). Please note: as you enter the woods, the track straight ahead is private; the GR®7 continues along a small path on the left.

(7) When the GR®7 turns sharply to the right, leave it and carry on straight ahead along a wide track. You’ll reach a tarmac road; follow it to the right. At the junction of four roads, carry on straight ahead for a few metres.

(8) Take a path that winds its way to the left through the broom. The junction is marked with white-and-yellow signposts. Continue until you reach a road.

(9) Turn right onto it, then immediately turn left onto a road leading down towards La Cabanette.

(10) Opposite a private property gate, leave the road to the right. Walk alongside a small tributary of the Padelle, keeping it on your left. At a bridge made of a flat stone, turn right and head for the ford. After the ford, the path is not very visible but, by heading to the right, you’ll find a clear path that climbs back up towards the D289.

(11) Cross the road and take a wide track opposite, which leads to the Panlon signpost you passed on the way out.

(1) Continue to the right and retrace your steps along the route you took on the way out, back to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The ford across flat stones (10) is fairly easy if the water level isn’t too high, but it can be tricky after heavy rain. You can gauge the river’s flow by crossing the bridge over the Padelle after (6).

Worth a visit

A stop in the village is a must to see the beautiful houses with their slate roofs.

On the knoll of Pise, you can see one of the features marking the watershed: a survey marker with posts indicating the names of all the surrounding peaks.
