Park in the car park at the entrance to the medieval town.
(S/E) Walk up Rue Henri IV to Place Hubert de Beaumont (passing the Tourist Office) and turn left down Grande Rue until you reach the Guichet gate on the right-hand side of the bend.
(1) Walk a few metres along the Promenade de la Poterne, then turn left down Chemin de la Mule Blanche, which turns left before reaching Rue aux Chevaux. Continue on the right.
(2) Pass in front of the Grand Moulin (worth a visit) and cross the bridge over the Erve. Turn right onto the path and go straight up to the former Saint-Jean de la Fousillère retirement home.
(3) Walk along the surrounding wall on a path that slopes diagonally to the right.
(4) When you reach the tarmac road at Haut Essart, take a well-deserved detour to the famous Tertre Ganne viewpoint (220 metres to the right).
(5) Turn back.
(4) Descend, near three-hundred-year-old chestnut trees, along the small road of La Sorie to Gros Chêne.
(6) Turn left to enter the Charnie Forest. Ignore the first intersection and turn right.
(7) At the second intersection, turn left towards the east, then turn left again to head north and rejoin a small tarmac road near La Coualonnière.
(8) Turn right and follow the road until you turn left onto Chemin de la Mulochère. Pass through Champrond and Roisnon before coming out onto the D9.
(9) Turn right for about 400 metres, then turn left at the cross to reach the ridge above Haute-Farinière, which you will follow eastwards to the water tower reservoir. Follow the signs for "route n°29" to head south and return to the D9.
(10) Cross the road, descend opposite until you pass the Ruisseau de la Valette stream, then climb back up and continue straight on to the four-way junction after La Renardière.
(11) Then follow the small road on the right for about 450 metres.
(12) At the first crossroads, take the path on the left to reach the forest and the Table des Diables dolmen, making a small detour to arrive at the monument. Then continue westwards into the forest, ignoring two paths on the right.
(7) Turn left to pass in front of the Vierge des Bois (or Vierge de Beausoleil) surrounded by rhododendrons, then turn right (elevation 153) onto a path that you will follow for about 1.5 km.
(13) Go down Rue Pavée, paved with heavy sandstone cobblestones in the 17th and 18th centuries to facilitate mule transport to the numerous tanning, paper, cloth and oil mills.
(14) Cross the Erve at Pont Neuf, then follow it for a few moments before climbing the Chemin de la Croix Rouge on the right. Continue for about 50 metres on the Chemin de la Poterne.
(15) Turn left, then veer right at the fork just after to reach Place Hubert de Beaumont. Go down Rue Henri IV on the left to return to the car park where you started (S/E).
