Description of the walk

Parking is available at Place Ambroise de Loré.
Access by bus on line No. 3 of the Pégasse network.

Follow the yellow markings for No. 30.

(S/E) Departure at the entrance to the medieval town. Walk up Rue Henri IV (past the Tourist Office and Town Hall) to Place Hubert II de Beaumont.

(1) Turn right down Rue de la Belle Etoile and admire the view of the hamlet of La Rivière as you go. Turn right onto Chemin de la Poterne and veer left just before you reach the main road.

(2) Keep left to walk almost all the way down Chemin de la Croix Rouge, then turn right towards the old Choiseaux farm. Please note that this section is closed to bicycles and horses, which should turn right then left to rejoin route no. 30.

(3) Enjoy the Chemin des Dames and the pretty hamlet of La Rivière, a suburb with tiled houses, which grew up around the mills, particularly paper mills, which sold their products in Maine and Anjou for use as writing paper and playing cards. Cross Rue du Pont d'Erve and continue straight ahead to the wash house.

(4) Turn right, cross the wooden bridge and then cross the D7 (take care). Turn immediately right, then left and go straight on to reach the beautiful village of Chammes, following the left bank of the Erve.

(5) At Le Plessis, turn left, cross the Erve and go through Bourg-à-l'Abbesse. Then turn right, following the signs for the paths that run parallel to the meandering river and the contours of the Bois de l'Essart.

(6) Take the path on the left.

(7) Leave the bocage paths for a moment and take the small Blandouet-Chammes road on the right for about a hundred metres. Then take a path on the left to rejoin a road at a place called La Butte.

(8) Follow it to the right; it leads to the bridge over the Erve and then to the village of Chammes at the crossroads with Rue de l'Erve. Follow this street to the left. Note the reddish-brown colours of the ferruginous sandstone slabs, particularly on the church.

(9) Head north again along Chemin de la Motte, near the grocery shop, then, after a left turn, follow a long path on the right which joins a tarmac road further on. Take this road 50 metres to the left towards the west to visit the Chapelle de la Raierie chapel under its oak tree.

(10) Turn back and continue north-east then east via Maison-Neuve and Les Rousselières to the Chammes-Evron road (D235).

(11) This leads left to the hamlet of La Housserie. Turn right onto a long straight path and follow it until you reach the first houses of Sainte-Suzanne.

(12) Turn right onto Chemin des Fossettes, which runs alongside the swimming pool before crossing the D7. Continue along Chemin des Vignes.
Please note: cleaning work is currently underway at a place called La Croix Couverte. The area will be very wet from October 2023 to March 2024.

Continue straight ahead, then turn left onto Rue de la Belle Étoile to return to Place Hubbert II de Beaumont.

(1) Turn left to reach Place Ambroise de Loré (S/E).

Lovely walk starting from Ste Suzanne
The first 3 km are very pretty (Hameau des moulins+++)
Beyond that, the path is often flooded (after 4 days of good weather and a wet winter)
Forced to take the road for 500 metres and walk alongside fields
Nice view of Sainte Suzanne on the way back
Best done when it's very dry or you're very well equipped

A delightful walk around the village of Sainte Suzanne. We really enjoyed the variety of paths and landscapes. We particularly liked the start of the walk in the hamlet of Les Moulins.
The forest paths were sometimes impassable because they were very flooded (our shoes took a beating!).

A beautiful hike alternating between sunken paths, a few roads for connections, and lovely views of Sainte Suzanne, a very pretty medieval village. Well maintained and signposted, very easy and relaxing Dry at the end of May, bring appropriate equipment during wet periods.

The lower part of Sainte Suzanne with its windmills is superb. You do need to be well equipped with waterproof hiking boots, as many of the paths are flooded. I often hike at this time of year wearing very comfortable ankle boots, so it's not a problem for me.
