From Foncine le Haut, start at the village square where the fountain is. Take rue de l'église towards the source of the Saine, then turn off towards chez Vallet. Follow the red and white GR® signs. At Chez Vallet, leave the road for a path that passes between two hedges, then through pastures, still heading towards the source of the Saine and still following the red and white markings. At the signpost, leave the GR® on your left and continue straight on to the source of the Saine (1).
Once back at the signpost turn right, following the GR® as it climbs before levelling out on a contour. Walk past the large farm building then turn right, still following the GR® signs. The path climbs into the forest and joins a botanical trail, which you follow in the opposite direction until you reach a road at a place called Le Bayard.
(2) Change the signposting by following the two red and yellow lines that will take you to the belvedere at the split rock, which you will follow through the forest. Go as far as the lookout point, then retrace your steps a few metres before turning right, still following the red and yellow markings. The path first passes over open ground before progressing into the forest and returning to a road. Go as far as the Ruins lookout (3).
Descend along the road, following the yellow markings. At a right-angled bend to the left, turn right at the first house to reach the ruin watercourse (4) on an outward and return journey.
This round trip takes you through pastureland and then onto a woodland track before becoming a tiny footpath when you reach the ruin watercourse. A sign indicates the limit not to be exceeded in the event of high water.
Back at the right-angled bend, continue along the road for a few metres before turning right, following the yellow markings towards the Chevry. Be careful, as you cross pastures where the markings are quite distant, descend almost in a straight line, passing the drinking trough. When you reach La Chevry, turn left towards Foncine le Haut and Bas de la Ville, passing the chapel of St ROCH. After about 100m, the yellow signposts lead you to turn left.
Continue towards Foncine le haut. Once you have reached "Bas de la ville", follow the young signs to the D437, which you cross in front of the sawmill.
Walk past the water treatment plant, then follow the Saine upstream, still following the yellow markings, until you reach the village. Take the footbridge and return to your starting point by road.
