From Foncine-le-Haut to Bellefontaine

Thirteenth stage of the Échappée Jurassienne: discover the Jura Mountains on this stage between Haut-Jura and Haut-Doubs. Explore the cross-country ski trails of the Mont Noir massif, which are transformed into superb hiking trails in summer. Immerse yourself in a peaceful, unspoilt environment, where alpine flowers bloom alongside the woody scents of fir and spruce trees. Between the woods, valleys and ridges, enjoy the fresh air while admiring the picturesque landscapes.

This stage will also take you along the Bellefontaine and Mortes lakes, known for their peat bogs, which are home to remarkable flora and fauna.

Description of the walk

No signposting

(S) From the Val de Saine campsite, turn right onto the D437, pass the town hall and arrive at the small square with a fountain. You will find the GR®559A.

Red and white markings for the GR®509 and specific signs bearing the symbol "J".

(1) Turn right to pass to the left of the butcher's shop. Take the footbridge to cross the Saine and continue along Rue des Îles, which becomes Rue Marcel Royer. At the end of the street, continue along a path that leads to a footbridge on the left.

(2) Without crossing it, turn right to begin an ascent following the Way of the Cross with various stations leading to the statue of Christ with his arms outstretched over the land, erected on an original structure made of stones pierced with holes of a thousand shapes, found in the karstic area.

(3) After passing the Virgin Mary (from where there is an unobstructed view of the village and its surroundings), follow the path that leads to the hamlet of Villeneuve.

(4) Turn left, head south-east until you reach the intersection with Rue des Fontaines, then continue in the same direction, following the tree-lined path to the place called Les Pétetin. Continue in the same direction until you reach the signpost for "Ferme Valentin".

(5) Turn left (east) and, at the intersection, leave a PR® (public footpath), turn right into the pastures, then head south-west until you reach the intersection with a PR®.

(6) Leave it, turn left and right and continue climbing through the woods, ignoring all side paths. At the top of the hill, the path begins a short descent and climbs back up downstream of a bend to the left before reaching a crossroads.

(7) Continue left, northeast, then turn right to continue on a forest path. Stay on this path as it winds through the Pasquiers Badoz woods. Continue to the intersection with a PR® at elevation 1051.

(8) Continue left (southeast) to reach the signpost "Sur les Gits".

(9) Follow the signs for Foncine-le-Bas/Chapelle-des-Bois on the right. On the gently sloping path, you will soon reach an intersection with the GRP® de Haute Joux.

Red and white GR®5 and GR®509 markings and specific signs bearing the symbol "J".

(10) At the signpost, follow the signs for Chapelle des Bois on the left, heading south-southwest. Continue down the forest path until you reach the bottom, in front of a large meadow.

(11) Turn left to follow the path, pass a cross and, ignoring all the side paths, continue south-east until you reach the signpost for "La Norbière" in front of a farm in the middle of the pastures.

(12) Turn left (east), then right into the wooded area and continue south-east. Continue to Les Landry, at the entrance to the village of Chapelle-des-Bois.

(13) Turn left onto Chemin des Clarines and, after 100 m, stay on this road until you reach the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Chapelle-des-Bois. (Refreshments available on the left in a cheese shop)

(14) Keep right, pass the emergency services centre, then the post office/town hall, and turn left towards Sous le Risoux/La Madone on Chemin des Sources. Continue to the stream that feeds the peat bog on your right.

(15) Walk along the peat bog until you reach the GR® intersection. Leave the GR®5 on your left and continue right on the GR®509 towards the south-west. Continue until you reach the Madone farm.

Red and white markings for the GR®509 and specific signs bearing the symbol "J ".

(16) Pass in front of the farm and continue south-west. Continue until you reach the signpost marked "Sous le Risoux"

(17) Keep left, heading southwest, ignore the intersection with a PR® and continue straight ahead to the "Chez l'Aimé" lodge.

(18) Continue along the path to the picnic area at the junction with Lac des Mortes.

(19) Without turning in, continue left until you reach the paved road in the cold valley. Head northwest until you reach the stop sign at the intersection with the D18.

(20) Follow it carefully to the left towards Bellefontaine. Pass the La Croix Bleu holiday centre and continue to the signpost at the entrance to a left-hand bend.

(21) Leave the departmental road and take the path on the right that enters the woods and runs alongside the Ruisseau l'Evalude stream. Follow the stream until you arrive at the Chalet de la Taillerie in Bellefontaine.

(22) Turn right to cross the stream and find the motorhome area with a picnic area, ideal for setting up camp for the night (E).
