Description of the walk

Park in the Château de La Rochepot car park.

Drive down the road (D111D) towards the village. Turn left (rue du Château) just after the cross, then right (rue de l'Orme) and left (rue Bregnet). Cross the road (D973) and turn right up the Chemin de Gamay. Continue up to a cross.
At the crossroads, continue along the track opposite and pick up the PR®. Take the first track on the left and leave the PR®. Continue on this path. You are now on a path surrounded by trees.
When you reach the top of the hill, you'll come to a clearing, with a view of Chagny on the right. Entering the forest again, turn left at the first track. Follow this path to Melin.

When you reach Melin, turn left onto the road (rue du Vieux Château). At the crossroads (D973), go straight over the small bridge (rue d'Amont). On your left is a church and a wash-house. Continue along the road to the cross.
At the cross turn right (chemin de Polianges). At the junction of 2 roads, turn left onto a vineyard path which narrows a little further into a footpath. Follow the path (PR®) to the top of the mountain. At the junction of 2 paths, turn right (left will take you back to La Rochepot or Orches, signposted at this point). You're now on your way down the mountain. Before you reach St Romain, you'll find a signpost offering a panoramic view of the St Romain cliffs.

When you reach St Romain, take the lane ahead at the crossroads. The path is signposted "village haut" (natural wooden sign, a little faded). It's between 2 houses and starts with some stairs (narrow passage). I had trouble finding it. Steep, slippery climb to the top. You'll walk along a wall to the church (rue du vieux château). Turn left into rue du Presbytère, then right towards the church. When you reach the church square, the path is immediately to the left of the fountain. Go down this path which takes you back to St Romain. At the end of the path, take the "Grande Rue", which takes you past the first wash-house.
At the crossroads, turn right (rue des Moulins) and you'll see another wash-house. Climb the path along the stream, then through the undergrowth. You come to a road (D17), turn left and follow this road to the next junction. Take care on this busy road. At the crossroads, turn left (D171), follow this road along the cliff and follow the path that takes you off the road and onto the path along the cliffs.
At the cross in Orches, take the road in front of you and turn left 50m further on. Follow the path along the cliff. Beautiful views over the village.
In Orches, as you reach the road, you'll see a sign reading "Fontaine du Chaigne". When you reach the fountain, take the path on the left that goes uphill and follow it until you reach a road junction. Take the farm track in front of you as far as the orientation table. Take the path on the right at the orientation table. At the crossroads, turn left towards Baubigny (signposted at the crossroads).
Before you reach Baubigny, turn right at the cross and wash-house. Then turn left when you see another cross in a street going downhill. You can also go straight on, then turn left to pass the church. At the cross turn right. Follow the "Château de La Rochepot" signs back to your vehicle.

Practical information

Take care in wet weather on certain sections. The climb up to St Romain can be tricky in bad weather.

WARNING ON THE MAP TRACE AND WITH THE VISORANDO APPLICATION:
The route of the PR® between Melin "sous le Marsain" and "Le Marsain" has been modified. A dotted path can now be seen on the right at altitude 457m. This trail is not marked PR®, whereas on the ground it is the PR®. You'll see a 'cadole' (small stone cottage) just around the bend on this path(1)

In the nearby area

Discover the archaeological site of St Romain with explanatory panel. On the way back down to Baubigny, you'll discover an abandoned 14th-century village called "Dracy". If you'd like to stroll around these two places, allow an extra hour for the hike. At Orches, don't hesitate to go into the village for a view of the cliffs.

Always stay careful and alert while following a route. Visorando and the author of this walk cannot be held responsible in the event of an accident during this route.

Hello,

For me, the problem with Visorando is printing the route map in IGN 25/000 format so that I can follow and check it on the corresponding Top25 map...!
I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or if I haven't mastered the technique, but I can't manage to print a sufficiently legible map of this type!
I would like to be able to print the JMB trail (from Nolay) in this format...
Thanks for the rest...
All the best,

A very nice route, with some very beautiful sites and viewpoints.
I might have classed the walk as difficult, as some of the sections are quite steep and require some practice.

A very beautiful and well-described walk.
We just looked around a bit in the vineyards between Sous le Marsain and Le Marsain for the path that went up to the right to join the wooded area.
Yes, the climb up to Saint Romain haut is, in my opinion, best avoided in wet weather, as it must be slippery! But what a lovely little spot up there.
We didn't go as far as Baubigny, so we shortened the walk by following the signposted route to the Château de la Rochepot before descending to the village.

NB: - a nice little bar in Saint-Romain....
- we had downloaded the gpx track on the Oregon (for safety)

A very beautiful walk with many interesting sites: historic villages, churches, archaeological village... The route on the map is very good.
However, I had a lot of trouble finding the right path to start the walk at Rochepot, as the map was not zoomed in and the signs were not very clear at this point. The same applies just after the clearing with the view of Chagny: you have to turn left very quickly onto a path that isn't very visible when you're walking in that direction. And just after Melin, in the vineyards, there's a huge pile of stones blocking the road, so I couldn't find the "normal" path and had to scramble through the boxwood to get back to the path.
I had the Maps.me application, which is a detailed interactive map, to help me.
2 fountains with drinking water along the way (Melin and Saint Romain).
Lots of little remote clearings where you can bivouac for the night, away from the noise of the roads and human activity.
Thank you for this route!

Varied terrain
Beautiful views.
To be done with a minimum of hiking experience.

A very nice walk that alternates between woodland and vineyards, passing through villages.
2 nice climbs, both at Saint-Romain, which should be avoided if it's not dry.
I just couldn't find the path along the cliffs, but the road also takes you to Orches.

Another very nice hike, in very hot weather.

Very pretty cliffs and lots of interesting places along the way. We walked it in the opposite direction to try and escape the early afternoon heat. It wasn't necessarily a good idea, as we found the end (and therefore the beginning) a bit long and monotonous, but very sunny.

So it's best to avoid it in very hot weather.

Note that there is a water point near the town hall in Saint Romain.

A very nice and varied walk, with magnificent views over the Saône plain, very clear, a bit of forest, boxwood, beautiful paths, little tarmac, charming villages, a castle as it should be, a complete and very satisfying hike, I just wanted a bit more difference in altitude and distance ... Thank you for this great trail!

I tested' for 10 days in the Vercors
I had found and recorded all my stages on Visorando and switched everything over to my new GPS ...Le Pied...
Same good impression on the Visorando descriptions
In my region (North Burgundy) Visorando allows me to discover routes that are not listed in the regional guides.
I've now "switched" to using it for mountain bike outings, and maybe one day I'll be able to give you the benefit of my photos.
But that's another story... Bye!
