Description of the walk

Head to Orches and park at the village exit on the Route d’Orches in a grassy car park.

(S/E) Head towards the village of Orches along the grassy path leading from the car park to Impasse de Jallaud, then follow Route de Pommard, which crosses the village from west to east.

(1) Turn left onto Rue du Chêne and, at the bend, take the path opposite, slightly to the left, to climb up to the Fontaine du Chaigne.

(2) Retrace your steps back to the Route de Pommard.

(1) Turn left and continue through the village.

(3) At the end of the village, take the dirt track on the right. Continue straight on along this signposted path, past a pylon, and carry on until you reach the road. Turn left towards the village of Saint-Romain. After the Ruisseau du Verger, take the first left, Rue des Moulins, to have a look at the magnificent wash house.

(4) Retrace your steps and turn left to continue through the village. A second wash house will be visible on the left as you go downhill. Continue to the next crossroads, turn right onto Rue Perrière and note the pretty trompe l’œil in this street.
Continue downhill until you reach Rue de Poillange on the right. Follow it for about 200 metres, then turn onto the path leading uphill to the right. On the climb, at the Y-junction, turn left and head towards a crossroads with a sign pointing to “La Rochepot”.

(5) Continue left along this road and, at the next junction, keep following the signs for “La Rochepot” by keeping to the left. Cross the field and, at the end of it, keep to the right to find the path to follow. This path is winding. Reach a junction, follow the sign for “La Rochepot 6 km” and arrive at a T-junction.

(6) Turn left and, at the next X-junction, continue straight ahead. Begin a short descent; at the next junction, turn right and join the tarmac road. Turn left and follow this road, ignoring the path further on to the right which climbs up to Orches. After the farm, at the junction with an altitude of 353, turn left towards Melin and walk for about 350 m.

(7) Take the path on the right, cross a footbridge and head uphill. During this climb, ignore a path branching off to the left and continue to the viewpoint. Then continue along the path running along the edge of the cliff until you reach a track at an altitude of 431 metres. Turn right and follow this route to the wayside shrine (Croix de Choux).

(8) After the wayside cross, leave the road branching off to the left and take the grassy path to the right. There is a table with benches and a bench where you can take a break if you wish. Resume the path and, when you reach a vineyard, turn left to rejoin the tarmac road you left earlier.

(9) Turn right. You’ll notice a large stone standing like a menhir. Continue straight on to reach another tarmac road and follow it to the right for 200 m.

(10) At the right-hand bend, ignore the path leading off to the left and take the one opposite towards Baubigny. At the next junction (at altitude 391), turn left, follow the sign for the “Sentier des Combes et Crêtes” and walk for about a hundred metres.
.
(11) Take a small path on the left that leads into the woods. After a right-hand bend, follow the path uphill along the crest of the hill (yellow markings) and, once you reach the top, head down to the Château de la Rochepot.

(12) After admiring the château and its outbuildings, return to the path and turn right towards the car park. Cross the car park to reach the D111d, continue to the right and, after 300 m, at the crossroads by the wayside cross, keep left. The path climbs straight on to the archaeological remains of Les Teilles, the medieval village of Dracy, after passing close to the D906.

(13) Return to the path and, at an altitude of 513, turn left towards Bel-Air.

(14) Before the summit, at the edge of the woods on the right, take the grassy path on the right which forms part of theGR®7. At the Y-junction, after the Combe d’Eté, turn right and head for the orientation table.

(15) Then continue along theGR®7towards Orches.

(16) Take the path that descends to the right into the woods. Once at the road, turn right then left to reach the car park (S/E).

Stunning views from the ridges over the vineyards and orchards

Best avoided in hot weather, or start with St Romain!

I highly recommend it!

A really lovely 15km walk. Some lovely views from the cliffs.
Two steep climbs, otherwise easy to follow.
