The hike starts from the car park at the Ascain motocross track. There is an information board about the different animal and plant species you may encounter.
(S/E) Head west on a track that climbs towards La Rhune. After about 200 metres, turn left and continue climbing south then west.
(1) Turn left (south-east) then veer south to reach the top of a small valley.
(2) When you reach a small stream, take a path on the right to the Ihizelaia plateau and the Miramar viewpoint. This path narrows to become a footpath.
(3) A path coming from your right climbs up a valley with a small stream. Continue straight ahead towards the summit. The path crosses a small forest, then you begin the fairly steep climb. On your left, you will see the little Rhune train and a few vultures taking advantage of the updrafts produced by the terrain. Once at the top, cross the tracks and the station and go to the terrace, which offers a panoramic view of the entire Basque Country.
(4) The descent from the summit is via the same small path to the forest. Cross it and then, at the signposts, turn right towards the "three fountains".
(5) Cross the small stream and climb up the path opposite to reach the "Redoute" (an old fortification).
(6) To return, you can cut across the small horse pastures to find your way back. Descend to the small stream and cross it to return to the carriage road at the start, then descend to the car park at the start via the same route.
Fortunately, it didn't last long!
