Description of the walk

(S) Leave Ascain from in front of the church, via the D4, Oletako Bidea, towards Olhette, and take the second street on the right, Burdin Bidea. At the end, at the T-junction in front of a car park, turn left.

(1) Cross a stream that flows into the bend of the Nivelle. Ignore the streets and paths on the left and, a few metres before a Fork in the road, take the Chemin d’Harginenea on the left and climb up to the hamlet.

(2) Take the second path on the right (Chemin de Kisu Labea). Cross the hamlet of Kisu Labea via a few winding downhill sections and, on leaving it, you’ll come to a junction.

(3) First turn left then right and cross three streams. Continue straight on, climbing up Chemin de Gaineko Borda, heading north-west.

(4) At the crossroads, turn left without entering the hamlet of Gainekoborda and climb up to Bulantenea. At the Fork in the road (elevation 94), turn right and head back down, passing under two high-voltage power lines, then climb back up to the junction with the D704.

(5) Take a wider path on the right and immediately, diagonally, to the left, heading north-west. Pass under a high-voltage power line. At the next junction, go straight on and keep heading in the same direction. Continue along the path to a roundabout, turn left then veer right to pass under the motorway. Go round the next roundabout on the left and take the second exit.

(6) Cross the Untxin and enter Urrugne via Rue Bernard de Coral.

(7) At the Town Hall, head straight on down the street which becomes Rue Jean Fourcade as you leave. Cross the D810 with care and take the Vieille Route d’Espagne diagonally to the right opposite. Drive straight through the hamlet of Unabaita and stay on this road.

(8) At the junction, continue straight ahead along Chemin de Lurberri for about 150 metres and turn right at the next crossroads onto Chemin de Postaenea. Head uphill, reach a path, turn left onto it to reach the Croix des Bouquets.

(9) Go straight on, taking the D810 for a few metres . Very dangerous spot. Go round the roundabout on the left and take the straight, steeply descending path opposite, which becomes the Chemin de Maxanbaita.

(10) A few metres before the D810, turn right onto Chemin de Miguelchoenborda. Junction with theGR®®10. After passing the borda, the path becomes a track and then widens again 500m further on.

(11) At the next junction, turn right then take the first left onto Rue Errondenia. Enter Hendaye.

(12) Turn left onto Boulevard de l’Empereur (D358), which continues as Rue des Réservoirs.

(13) At the roundabout, take the first exit on the right (Rue d’Irandatz) and continue to the next roundabout. Go round it on the left to take Rue du Commerce, which leads straight to the station (E).

At the roundabout after point 7, it is impossible to follow the recommended route; there is a padlocked barrier blocking access. Why is this???
You must follow the D810 to reach point 8
If you wish to go to Hendaye beach or continue towards Spain via Hondarrabia (‘Fontarrabie’) by ferry – €2.30 for the crossing, which takes less than 10 minutes – I recommend following the GR 10 from point 8; this will take you there directly.

Thank you for your comment.
This hike is an integral part of the Euskal Herria, Iparalde route, an east-west crossing of the French Basque Country.
I think that explains why the route follows small roads

This walk takes place exclusively on quiet country lanes. It is only of interest to those seeking unobstructed views of La Rhune. However, the villages of Ascain and Urrugne are well worth a visit. It is particularly recommended for walkers who are unfamiliar with the Basque Country.
