The Sainte-Marguerite peninsula along the Aber Wrac'h and Aber Benoît

See the mountains plunge into the sea. As you walk along the two largest Breton abers, you will appreciate the different landscapes that each turn offers.

This two-day route can be done in either direction, and you will notice that the landscapes are completely different. Mainly on theGR®34, the route is simple and well marked.

Description of the walk

Park in the Town Hall car park.

(S/E) Leave the car park via Rue de la Mairie, heading west towards the church. Take the street on the right. At the end, first turn right then left onto Rue Pierre Richard to take Rue de la Haie Blanche, which runs alongside the cemetery. It then becomes Rue de l'Abbé Roudot. Go straight ahead at the crossroads with Rue de la Libération and continue for 50 metres along Rue Olivier Mercelle.

(1) Turn right onto the path and continue left onto Rue de Mezeozen. At the roundabout, continue straight ahead towards Tréfily.

(2) One hundred metres after the crossroads with Feunteun Lez, take the path on the left (see note in "During the hike"). When you reach Rimier, follow the road on the right. Continue left towards Keruzouarn. Walk past the houses and continue to the beach. You have now reached one of the banks of the Aber Wrac'h.

Red and white markings forthe GR®34

(3) Turn left. Take thefirst road on the right. Pass Port de Paluden and the houses of Bel Abri. Follow the path on the left and ignore the paths on the right and left.

(4) Take the hairpin bend to the right to pass in front of the wash house and head up towards Kerviré. At the hamlet, follow the road to the left for 50 metres, then take the path to the right. It descends gently towards the foreshore, bending to the left before reaching Kameuleud.

(5) Follow the road, then turn right to continue along the shore. The path makes a wide circular loop away from the shore to reach Saint-Antoine.

(6) Follow the Route de Doenna on the right, then turn right to make a circular loop on the foreshore. Join the small road and follow the port of Aber Wrac'h. Turn left/right and pass in front of the post office. You are now on the Route des Anges.

(7) Leave this road at the bend after the chapel and continue straight ahead along the shore. On your right is Baie des Anges. Pass Ar Vrennig and Poull Kansot, then follow the road on the right that runs alongside Kerdreaz.

(8) We begin the tour of the Sainte-Marguerite peninsula, which will end next to the Abers campsite. Continue to the right to follow Kermengi and arrive at Poull Log.

(9) Turn right to continue along the shore. The path goes around the point, staying as close as possible to the shore. In the middle of the Aber is a small island: Île Cézon, with its fort that defended the entrance to the Aber.
Continue along the path, ignoring all the paths on the left, until you reach the point: Penn Énez.

(10) Descend towards the south-west and arrive at the Penn Énez car park. Continue south, ignoring all paths on the left. Reach the Abers car park.

(11) Following our recommendation to split the route into two parts, the entrance to the Abers campsite is on the left, about two hundred metres away.

Leave the Sainte-Marguerite peninsula, continuing south. Go around a copse and arrive at the Prad al Lann car park. Continue along the coast. On your right is Anse de Brouennou, and on your left is the chapel and village of Broennou.
Continue to Pointe d'Ar Vilh

(12). From this point, Aber Benoît is on your right. Walk along Port du Vrill and then the fish ponds to reach the end of the path.

(13) Take the road on the left. For a while, theGR® trail moves away from the coast. At the end of the road, turn right and then right again after 100 metres. Continue south, passing the Prat ar Coum wash house on your left, and continue along Route Delamare Deboutteville.

(14) When you reach Caméan, turn right and head towards the riverbank. After heading south, the trail makes a wide turn to the east and goes around two sandy headlands. It then heads north to a wash house. There, it makes a sharp right turn and ends at the access road to Penhoat.

(15) Follow the road to the right, then turn left onto the coastal path. Go around Anse de Kervégélan. You will reach the D28 departmental road.

Off the marked trail

(16) Turn left. TheGR®34turns right, taking the bridge over the Aber.
Turn right towards the houses; the road furthest to the right leads to the Château du Roual (off the route). Go straight ahead at the crossroads.

(17) Turn right at Milin al Lenn, then turn left and carefully cross the D113 road.

(18) At the Troubirou calvary, follow the path on the right. Turn onto the road on the left and enter Lannilis via Rue de Prat Meinoc.

(19) In front of the football pitches, turn right onto Rue Alphonse Salaun. At the end, turn left onto Rue de Verdun, which ends in front of the Town Hall (S/E).

Notes

Given the length of the route, we recommend doing this hike over two consecutive days. There are many campsites on the peninsula. We recommend Camping des Abers for two reasons:
- it is located halfway along the route (15.8 km from the start)
- unlike others, it offers free pitches: in 2019, expect to pay between €20 and €25 per night for two people in high season, provided you have your own equipment. (booking is strongly recommended).

It goes without saying, but it is worth mentioning here that the landscape varies greatly depending on the tide. At high tide, only a few islands are visible, but at low tide, the shore and rocks offer a spectacular sight, enhanced by the presence of a few sailing boats.

Worth a visit

After the (2), if the path is not maintained (tall grass), continue straight on to the Tréfily junction. Turn left towards Kéruzouarn to rejoin the route at this hamlet.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

We were lucky to do the route in beautiful sunshine, which makes a big difference. A very pleasant walk with magnificent scenery along the Abers. The circular route isn't too difficult, but it's still 31 km long.

Hello,

Some information is no longer up to date as of 24/08/2024:
0.64 Turn right onto the path (the path has been paved)
1.48 100 m after the crossroads with Feunteun Lez, take the path on the left (the path is not maintained: there is only tall grass, which discourages any attempt to venture onto it)
The elevation gain indicated appears to be underestimated:
183 m, whereas my Strava indicator gives 432 m of positive elevation gain
However, the measurement I recorded needs to be confirmed (I missed the path after Kerviré on the right to go towards Kerzalou and Kameuleud and return to Kerviré from the foreshore: the "Balade de l'Enfer" // at the Ste Marguerite dunes with their sandy paths, I may have climbed more dunes than you anticipated // from point 17 Milin al Lenn, I took the shortest route to reach the DA)

I congratulate you on this description.
Perhaps your instructions generally lack information about the nature of the terrain and any difficulties. For example , there are three steep climbs to reach the path, which is non-existent in places, going a little further inland, and mainly in the shade of hedges or the edge of the undergrowth, on the Aber Benoît.

Half-day hike, nothing to say, really superb from start to finish, especially at low tide.
The only downside is the road before the bridge. Be very careful, as traffic is heavy and moves very fast.
Thank you very much for the route.
Enjoy your hike, everyone!

Done early in the morning at low tide, with low-angled light and birds everywhere. Magnificent passages with superb views of sandbanks and turquoise water, different landscapes at every turn. A feast for the eyes. Frequented only around Pointe Sainte-Catherine, the rest of the route is rather deserted. To be sure of the route, I sometimes take a look at Google Maps in satellite mode because I don't have internet and therefore don't have the app. Happy hiking to everyone.

Superb hike. Definitely worth doing again. The only downside is the end, which is on very busy roads with lots of cars.

A very pleasant hike, especially the Aber Wrac'h section. The signposting from Lannilis could be improved, as could the return from Aber Benoit when leaving the GR34.
It might be useful to mention when other hiking routes overlap, which would help avoid mistakes when planning your route.

A magnificent hike where the landscape changes with every turn.

I didn't follow the wise advice to do this hike over two days, which somewhat spoiled the enjoyment of the walk during the last two hours...
There was a slight difficulty in reaching Rue de Mezeozen, perhaps due to a large construction site. Otherwise, navigation is simple: just keep the sea on your right.

Thank you for this beautiful route.
