The Pointe d'Angolon

A beautiful circular route, starting right next to the Col de Joux Plane. The Pointe d’Angolon and the ridge walk leading to it offer exceptional panoramic views.

Description of the walk

Access: from Annemasse (Geneva), take the A10 motorway, exit 19 (Cluses). Follow signs for Taninges, then Samoëns; on leaving the village, turn left and follow signs for “Col de Joux-Plane”. The road leading to the pass is steep and quite long. You can park near the lake.

(S) From the Chalet du Col car park (1,691m), take the track that climbs towards the Col de Joux Plane (road pass). Leave the track to the right and head towards the small pass at the foot of the Pointe de Chamossière, crossing a mountain pasture on a poorly marked path. We opted for a more direct ascent (from the pass, you can reach the Pointe de Chamossière at 1,889m). Once on the ridge, follow the path heading towards the Pointe d’Angolon (north-east).

(1). A rollercoaster-like ascent will take you past the top station of the Chamossière chairlift (TS Chamossière, 2,006m), via the Collu (2,066m); short exposed sections secured by cables) before finally reaching the Pointe d’Angolon, at 2,090m (superb views).

(2) Continue by following the path down towards the Pointe de Nyon. Take care, as the ground can become very slippery. The route is very steep (regular yellow markings). You will pass between two large boulders; after a few groups of spruce trees, the path veers left into a valley, below the Collu, before descending steeply in switchbacks. The terrain has suffered from recent torrential rain and mudslides sometimes block the path. You soon reach a mountain pasture carpeted with multicoloured flowers.

(3) Without going all the way to the lake, head down to the left, before the Têtes chairlift (Nyon du Crot), and follow the ski run to reach the Chalets de Joux Plane (1,483m).

(4). From there, you can take the track that climbs quite steeply to the left for a quicker route to the Col de Joux Plane (1,712m). For our part, we took advantage of the fact that the pass road is currently closed due to several fairly severe rockfalls to follow the road to the Col du Ranfolly (terminus of the Nauchet chairlift).

(5) Continue along the D354 to Lac de Joux Plane to return to the car park.

Notes

As the area is very busy, set off early in the morning and/or avoid weekends.

Worth a visit

Superb views from the summit of the Pointe d’Angolon: the Buet, the Dents du Midi, the Dents Blanches, the Tête de Bostan, the Mont Blanc massif, the Aravis (Pointe Percée), the Bargy... In the immediate vicinity: the Pointes de la Golèse, de la Léchère, de Fornet and de l’Aiguille, de Chavanette, de Vorlaz, the Hauts Forts, Cornette and Pointe de Nyon, much of the Chablais region, including the Roc d’Enfer, and many others.

From the Col du Ranfolly, you can follow the Tour des Portes du Soleil trail (on the left as you head towards Joux Plane); you pass Ranfolly (1,770m) and reach a signpost on the ridge of the Tête du Vuargne (1,825m); from there, you can either descend directly towards the Col de Joux Plane, or take a short round trip to reach the summit of the Tête.

Hike not completed; route through the mountain pastures, no visible path. Not a very promising start!

A magnificent hike featuring sections along the ridges and 360-degree views. There are a few technical and challenging sections.

Stunning views of the Mont Blanc massif.
The Nyon-Guérin Lake refuge is well worth a visit.
To minimise the road section at the end, near the Col de Ranfolly, we took the Joux-Plane ridge path (marked – a bit of extra elevation gain) to return to the Joux-Plane pass car park. The path passes close to a viewing platform which once again offers a stunning view of Mont Blanc (a sign names the various peaks).

Thank you, Étienne, for correcting the elevation gain.

On this hike, the alternative route mentioned at the end of the description (Ranfolly – Vuargne ridge orientation table) seems far preferable to following the D354 for several kilometres, even if it does increase the elevation gain slightly.
You could even avoid this road even more by taking the track that runs from the Chamossière chairlift to Joux Plane, even if it means making a return trip along the Crête du Vuargne to enjoy the view.

Hello Pit,

I completely agree, a 1,267m elevation gain deserves a ‘Difficult’ rating!

However, the elevation gain shown was greatly overestimated. I’ve just run a new automatic calculation of the altitudes and the elevation gain has been reduced to 640 m: this is more in line with the route on the map and remains in the ‘Moderate’ category.

Hello
It says: “Elevation gain: 1,267 m”, difficulty: Medium.
If there really is a cumulative elevation gain of 1,267 m, in my opinion it shouldn’t be classified as ‘Medium’ even if there are no technical difficulties.

Hello, please correct the starting point.
It’s the Col de Joux-Plane, not the Col de la Forclaz

The sections on the road are a bit too long for my liking.

Kind regards
