Pointe à Cabrits

A very short and informative walk, suitable for children, in a less crowded area than Pointe des Châteaux, offering superb views of the Atlantic coast of Grande-Terre.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at Anse à la Gourde beach, at the end of a small road running perpendicular to the one linking the village of Saint-François and Pointe des Châteaux (D118), on the left shortly after the primary school when coming from Saint-François.

Markings: Yellow + numbered posts with figures + directional signs “Trace de la Pointe à Cabrits”
The directional signs are one-way, indicating the outward route.

(S/E) Facing the large information board, turn left onto a wide sandy path. Pass a chicane (two rocks on the ground) and find post no. 1. Pass a bench on your right and continue through the undergrowth. At post no. 2, pass another bench on your right.

At a T-junction, turn right onto a narrow path, which soon becomes grassy. Ignore a path branching off to the left towards some houses and continue through the dry coastal vegetation. At signpost no. 3, pass some more benches on your right. Pass post no. 4 and arrive at a junction (view of the sea to the right).

(1) Then turn left and climb a grassy path that curves sharply to the right (there is no junction as suggested by the map background... or if there is, it is barely marked). At post no. 5, continue straight ahead, passing two barriers on your left.

(2) At the fork just after the signposts for “Anse à l’Eau” and “Pointe des Châteaux”, turn right. Descend through the vegetation, pass posts no. 6 and then no. 7, and reach a viewing platform at Pointe à Cabrits.

(3) The return journey follows the same route in the opposite direction. N.B. At the two signposts marked "Trace de la Pointe à Cabrits" following marker post no. 3, turn left (do not go right towards the houses). This will take you to Anse à la Gourde (S/E).

Notes

Good walking shoes are sufficient for this short hike on well-maintained paths.

Despite the short length of the route and the presence of some shade, make sure to bring water and sun protection suitable for your own skin type.

Despite the abundance of signposting along this route, a detailed map remains useful (at the very least the one accompanying this description).

Worth a visit

At Anse à la Gourde (S/E):
- A nesting site for sea turtles: please respect the area!
- A beach for a refreshing swim that will delight lovers of waves and swells. Be aware, however, of coral shoals and a strong side current: exercise caution, especially with children!

Along the route:
- The numbered posts correspond to the stages of a route with an audio guide available to download on your smartphone.
- The rock outcrops visible in places along the path are made up of the remains of coral reefs, the structure of which is still clearly visible.

At Pointe à Cabrits (3):
- Superb panoramic view of the north-east coast of Grande Terre, stretching as far as Pointe des Châteaux to the right.
- Viewpoint overlooking the island of La Désirade offshore.
- A large illustrated historical timeline, from the Amerindian settlements to the 21st century.

Nearby:
Pointe des Châteaux, the eastern tip of Grande Terre.

This walk was very easy and accessible.
The children were delighted; they ran about everywhere, and the panoramic view was quite beautiful. There was also a brief description of Guadeloupe included with the view. When we came back down, we went to the beach and then to a snack bar. I’m proud to have discovered this place.

Very good. The route on the ground is quite intuitive as it’s marked by numbered wooden signs, so we didn’t need the map. We went there in the late afternoon, so it wasn’t too hot, the light was superb and the view from the orientation table was magnificent. A very easy short walk, suitable for children. The start is in front of the Honoré restaurant. There’s even a sign for the route to help you find your bearings. We hadn’t downloaded the app for the ‘informative’ audio guide as we set off on the walk without much preparation; nevertheless, we didn’t always spot all the signposts needed to activate the audio guide. I think the vegetation needs more maintenance as it obscures the route, and we must have missed out on some interesting features.

We walked from Pointe des Châteaux to Baie d'Olive via the path that goes past Pointe des Cabris. 10.4 km of beautiful sea views and stunning beaches, with a path featuring some fairly steep ascents and descents. It’s best to have walking poles if you’re not particularly fit. A more challenging path from Pointe des Cabris to Baie d'Olive, where you sometimes need to use your hands; there’s a rope to help at the end of the route. The path goes through the forest and past the wind turbines. A very good walk.
