From Saline Beach to Petit Havre Beach

Park at the Saline beach car park.

(S/E) The start of the trail is near the car park: head eastwards along the coast. Watch out for the manchineel trees lining the path at the start (see the ‘Practical Information’ section).

(1) Walk along the rocks overlooking the bay. Continue eastwards (there are some lovely views here and there). You will then reach Petit Havre beach (beyond this point, the coastline turns south towards Pointe du Petit Havre).

(2) The return journey follows the same route to La Saline beach (S/E).

Trainers are recommended. Take water with you (at least 50cl).

There are three fairly steep climbs where you’ll need to hold on to the roots and surrounding trees, so this trail also gives your arms a good workout. Take care on the descent.

Watch out for manchineel trees!
At the start of the walk, the path is lined with shrubs bearing fruit that look like small apples: under no circumstances should you bite into them! These are manchineel trees, whose fruit is highly poisonous. If ingested, you must go to hospital for a stomach pump. Do not shelter under these trees in the rain either, as the raindrops become laden with corrosive sap.

On arrival, you can go for a swim to enjoy the beautiful beach at Petit Havre, have a sandwich and rest for a while before heading back. Pure pleasure!
