Description of the walk

From Chatellerault, take the D14 towards Pleumartin. Park near the village market halls and the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville.

(S/E) At the sign, walk past the market halls towards the church until you reach Rue de la République (D14). Cross the road at the crossing near the restaurant and turn left. Walk past the police station, then the municipal offices, and head towards the cemetery.

(1) Turn right at the corner. Follow the castle wall and, at the three-way junction, take the dirt track on the left until you reach the start of the housing estate. Continue along the road and, at the gap in the fence, turn right towards L’Huilerie. At the three-way junction, turn right.

(2) Walk through the hamlet of L’Huilerie, keeping to the right. Then, at the last house, go down a steep, stony path. Cross the small road and cross the Ruisseau de la Luire (take care in wet weather). Head back up towards the next hamlet (La Salandière).
At the three-way junction, turn left (there’s a pylon behind the buildings on the left) and continue along the road to the village of Russais.

(3) Walk through the village, past the restored houses, and at the end of the hamlet, turn right and continue along the open road, ignoring the two paths on the left. You’ll reach the D16.

(4) At the ‘give way’ sign, turn left onto the D16. Immediately afterwards, cross it carefully and turn right onto the wide path through the fields. Continue along the open path.

(5) At the junction in the bend, take thesecond path on the left between the copses. Carry on, ignoring the path coming from the left, until you reach a junction where several paths meet.

(6) Turn right onto the straight, tarmac path between the copses and fields, ignoring the grassy path on the right, and continue to the busy D3.

(7) Cross it very carefully. Continue straight ahead on the small road, ignoring the path on the right, and shortly afterwards, turn left onto a grassy track. At the road, turn right and enter the village after passing roads on the left. You’ll arrive in front of the church.

(8) Turn left at the church and carry on straight ahead until you reach No. 45. Head down the stony path which starts opposite, near a pump. Go under the bridge, turn right and climb up onto the greenway.

(9) Turn right and follow it through the woodland. Carry on until you reach the D14.

(10) Cross it carefully and carry on straight ahead. Do the same at the next road and, at the second junction, turn right into a residential area. Take thefirst street on the left (Chemin de l’Agreau, a one-way street). At the end of this, turn left onto the pavement of the main road. Immediately on the left, take Rue Descartes. Take care when crossing this narrow street; after number 24, take the alleyway surrounded by low walls leading to the wash house.

(11) Then turn left. Just before the public buildings with a green space, turn sharply right into the small street. At the electricity pole, turn left then right towards the square and the car park to return to the starting point. (S/E)

Overall, a lovely route offered by "Grand Châtellerault", but with a problem with the signposting in the village of "Crémille".
The description does not match the signposting, and what's more, three different hiking routes pass by the same spot in front of the church.
The GR 364, PR18 and PR41 make it very difficult to find your way around.

The route is signposted in yellow, not blue. The hamlet of L'HUILERIE is absolutely lovely, restored in the traditional style; the route is well signposted, though for my taste there are too many narrow roads, so there’s no shade when it gets too hot!!! The LUIRE stream is still difficult to cross.

A walk passing through several small villages.
A well-shaded and pleasant path along the old railway line
Some sections, however, are very sunny and on Sunday it was very hot 🔥
All in all, a good walk
