Description of the walk

At the entrance to Barcillonnette coming from Vitrolles via the D20, continue to the junction near the town hall. On the right is a car park which serves as the start and finish point of the route.

(S/E) Take the Route d'Espréaux (the left-handmost of the three roads), which heads north-west and crosses the village towards the Col d'Espréaux. Continue for about 50 metres until you reach Rue de la Forge.

(1) Turn left to climb this steep, dead-end lane. At the top, ayellow PR®-marked trail branches off to the left. Follow this trail towards the Col de Peyssier. Apart from the section at the Torrent de Rousserand, the climb is mostly through woodland. Leave the woods and reach a large earthen platform, from which several tracks and trails branch off.

(2) From there, head straight ahead off-trail for about twenty metres to reach the ridge line on your right (north-north-west). Once you reach the well-marked path (which is not shown on the IGN map), you’ll have no trouble crossing over to the Col des Garçins. The path is wide and follows an electric fence for almost the entire length. To avoid taking a wrong turn, it is important to continue the crossing until you reach the sign marking the Col des Garçins.

(3) Turn right, towards Esparron or Barcillonnette. You are now on theGR®93, marked with red and white signs. After 300 m, the path rejoins a much wider forest track.

(4) At a hairpin bend, a signposted mountain bike trail allows you to cut across the next bend: if you miss it, don’t panic, you’ll soon be back on the forest track. After a very pleasant stretch through the forest, you’ll reach a rockier section and continue the descent to the Serre Claud signpost.

(5) Turn right towards Barcillonnette. The trail runs alongside meadows and ends on the Col d’Espréaux road (D20).

(6) Turn right and follow the road with care. Reach the village of Barcillonnette and walk through it. Return to the original junction.

(1) Continue straight on to the town hall and return to the car park (S/E).

A very pleasant hike today, Friday 27/02/26. The ridge was covered in snow, and I missed my snowshoes...

Featuring three dogs that react strongly to other dogs in canicross
Safe route, very pretty
Stunning views at the top; the ridge is magnificent and extremely safe (I’m afraid of heights)
You do run alongside a pasture, though – we’ll have to see if there are cows or sheep there in the summer
The forest is very pretty and peaceful too

A very pleasant hike on 15 February in glorious sunshine. We didn’t come across a single soul. No technical difficulties.
Quite a steep climb at the start (roughly the first half). The sections through the woodland are refreshing! Signposting is easy to follow.
On reaching the pass, follow the guidebook by continuing up the ridge to the right (no markings along the entire ridge). The horizon gradually clears, offering beautiful 360° views all along the ridge line. Truly superb!
Then the descent begins; you’ll find markings again. The return to Barcillonnette is less interesting, a bit long and icy in places.
The stated 5 hours is a very comfortable estimate. Set off with hiking gear.

A beautiful route offering 360-degree views from the ridge. Please note there are some steep climbs, including the unmarked section leading to the ridge. The ridge was heavily snow-covered, but we had no problems with a group of 18 hikers.

Hello
The path isn’t marked on maps, but it still has yellow markings. There are no signs indicating ‘private property’ or ‘no entry’. As always, you need to show respect and use common sense! I mentioned that there is a fence. The owner has placed it outside the path. He therefore has no intention of preventing people from passing through. Of course, you should avoid letting dogs run loose, as they might run into the herd and disturb it.

Hello, are there any private properties along the ridge line off the marked trails? Thanks. Doesn’t the trail cross some pastureland?
