Description of the walk

From the village of Sigoyer (20 km south-west of Gap), follow the Col des Guérins road via the D219 and park at the pass car park. The walk starts from the car park on the forest track.

(S/E) Follow the forest and pasture track for a short while until you reach a Fork in the road.

(1) Leave the track by turning right onto the small path that climbs towards the Col de la Baume. Climb initially through an old meadow, cross a track, then continue along long switchbacks through the pine trees where you will need to climb over several fences; make sure to close them properly. Reach the ridge and turn left.

(2) Leave the GR® de Pays to the left before it begins its descent and find the track. Head right to its end, then follow the path that runs along the grassy ridge (south-east) with the summit in sight.

(3) Turn right, following the yellow markings, and after a short climb, reach the foot of a small rocky outcrop. Cross this outcrop via a short climb up a chimney (good handholds on the left). Continue over sloping, gravelly slabs (take care in wet weather) to reach a lovely grassy area and then a small pass. Climb a final short, rocky ascent to reach the summit (681 m).

(4) From the summit, descend back to the previous junction.

(3) Take the correct path on the right, which is quite steep, leading to a hairpin bend (clearly visible from the small pass) on the forest track.

(5) Follow the track down (north-west) towards the starting point.

(6) Keep to the right at the three-way junction and leave the climb on your left, then rejoin the original route.

(1) Head straight ahead to reach the car park (start/finish).

Notes

Access to the summit is a little ‘technical’ (a 3 or 4 m climb) but is not compulsory. This justifies the ‘Difficult’ rating. If you do not go to the summit, the rating becomes ‘Moderate’.

Alternative route: for a longer alternative (total of 5 hours), after returning from (4), turn left at (3) to return to (2). Then follow the GRP® Pays de Céüse on the left (southbound) towards the Col de Bois Rien (altitude 1,455 m).
From the pass, take the path on the left which skirts the Petit Céüse along the slope for just over 1 km. It passes the southern shoulder (altitude 1,500 m) and descends through the woods to the hamlet of Ravourier (altitude 1,200 m). Then follow the track for 200 m and take the GRP® on the left, which leads to Les Guérins at an oratory, then to the pass car park, 400 m higher up the road.

A lovely hike, with superb views of all the surrounding snow-capped peaks.
There was still plenty of snow and we had to make our way by feel, as the paths were no longer visible.
We didn’t take the climbing route up as the rock and our shoes had become slippery.
We’ll have to do it again this summer!

A lovely circular walk taking in the summit of Céusette; the route description is very clear.
The walk is well worth it for the beautiful scenery, with a particularly lovely view of Céuse.
No real difficulty, but a few tricky sections towards the end.

A lovely walk, but there’s a rather tricky section towards the end for those who are afraid of heights.
