Walking on water at the Réchicourt-le-Château lake

The Réchicourt-le-Château Lake occupies a rather unusual position. The Marne-Rhine Canal has crossed it since 1965. In fact, it was decided at that time to build the “Grand Écluse”, which made it possible to bypass nearly six locks on the old canal. As a result, a section of the route is a path flanked on either side by part of the lake. Another major attraction is the Grand Écluse itself, which features numerous facilities for tourists.

Description of the walk

Car park at the Réchicourt-le-Château Lake Arboretum.

(S/E) Facing the lake, turn right onto the small tarmac road towards the Grande Écluse (signposted).

(1) When you reach the canal bank, turn left at the fork. You will be “walking on water” for 1.5 km.

(2) At the end of the crossing over the pond, take the footbridge and then a second one spanning the old canal. Then continue along the path to the left, following the canal.

(3) After 500 m, at the junction by the old Lock 7 (remains still visible), take the road on the right which leads onto a path through the woods for 300 m.

(4) At the fork, continue right along the path into the forest. You will walk alongside part of the pond. After 1 km, at the crossroads, continue right along the path for 400 m.

(5) At a junction, continue along the path to the right, staying by the edge of the pond. Please note, the path is not marked on maps but does indeed exist (it is actually signposted).

(6) After 1.5 km, on the right, a sign reads “petite taïga”. Cross the footbridge and take in this sight. Then continue along the path for 150 m.

(7) Turn right to take the section running alongside the old canal. The site is very interesting.

(8) At the end, near the footbridge you have already crossed, cross the old canal and turn left onto the section running alongside the canal in the opposite direction to the “Grande Écluse”, 2 km away, which features a well-equipped picnic area and an impressive structure

(9) Walk around it and return along the canal to the junction where you started.

(1) Then turn left to return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Great Lock of Réchicourt-le-Château
The large lock at Réchicourt-le-Château is a remarkable engineering feat on the Marne-Rhine Canal, inaugurated in 1965. With a head of water ranging from 15.45 m to 16.18 m, it is considered the highest Freycinet-gauge lock in France. This structure was built to replace a series of six locks, and allows boats to pass through in 30 minutes, compared to 6 hours previously. On this site, you can discover some surprising structures, all set in a unique atmosphere. The large lock is accessible by water, by road, and also via the cycle path that runs largely alongside the canal. Thanks to its height, the lock offers a magnificent view of the canal. Picnic tables and barbecues allow you to fully enjoy a relaxing moment amidst the water and nature, punctuated by impressive passages of boats through the lock.

The Arboretum (starting point)
Set amidst water and nature, it’s the ideal place to recharge your batteries! The arboretum is situated on the banks of the Étang de Réchicourt-le-Château. It is open to the public. There is a picnic area and a cycle path runs past it.

Avoid this walk during heavy rain.
In wooded areas, the path is slippery and, if the water level in the pond rises, you may no longer be able to follow the marked route.

Let’s be absolutely clear. This route is undoubtedly a delight in summer. We were, of course, visiting after heavy rain and flooding. This meant that between the flooding and the mud on this path, with bushes strewn everywhere and some broken bridges, it was very difficult. This path is definitely best tackled in summer; however, the old locks and the new lock meant that, overall, this hike was a very positive experience.

A really interesting and easy route, even for someone who was discharged from hospital after heart surgery a month ago
It’s an excellent comeback.

A lovely walk that allowed us to discover a pleasant, unspoilt countryside, with water everywhere. The large lock alone is well worth a visit!

The only point of contention is the location of the ‘little taiga’, marked as point 6 on the route description but which we couldn’t find there; it is indicated by a sign on the right between points 8 and 9. (‘Department initiative’). A mystery...

Also worth noting is a small, almost invisible footbridge with a somewhat tricky access point between points 7 and 8, which allows keen walkers to cross the old canal and thus save a few dozen metres.

A lovely, easy walk that takes us along the water’s edge and through the forest, with plenty of points of interest. A real gem.
