How to get there: Head towards Bérive via the D3. When you reach the village, stay on the same road. Park near Bérive church, which is on the right-hand side of the road (on the left if coming from La Plaine des Grègues).
(S/E) From the church, follow the D3 westwards towards Le Tampon. Take the first track on the right, which leads to a football pitch. Go round it on the right and take the first path on the right. It’s a bit overgrown but you can get through! You’ll soon reach Piton Nathalie and its beautiful filaos.
(1) For the sections around Piton Nathalie, I strongly recommend downloading the route track as there are so many junctions! But the main thing is to go round the piton on the right. You’ll mainly be walking under the filaos on this section. The climb is short, shaded and pleasant on paths frequented by mountain bikers. Towards the end of the climb, you’ll pass a small meadow offering a lovely view of the hills to the east. Watch out for a few slippery sections on the descent through the chocas and casuarina trees.
(2) Once you’ve started the descent, take the first path on the right. Enjoy a lovely view towards the Chaîne du Bois de Nèfles at the end of the descent. You’ll reach a track; follow it to the right. Here you’ll find a magnificent eucalyptus tree with an enormous trunk!
Then leave the inconspicuous track on the left and take the one on the right. This one is overgrown with grass, but is still very passable. It winds its way through the sugarcane fields, which, when cut, offer a wider view of the surrounding area. Before the next junction, you’ll pass close to a pineapple field.
(3) At the end of the track, carry on straight ahead onto Impasse des Tourterelles Pays. It climbs steadily through the sugarcane before turning into a track. Follow it.
Keep to the left at the next junction and continue climbing gently through the sugarcane fields. Then carry on straight ahead at the next one. The track passes close to the crops, which are in varying states of condition, and a few nasturtiums. It is from these crops that you can admire Piton de Mont Vert as well as the route you have covered since Piton Nathalie.
(4) At the next junction, turn left onto a track that is becoming increasingly overgrown. Ignore the very faint track on the right (which is very overgrown) and turn left to make a 90° left-hand bend before reaching a crossroads: take the right-hand branch and then continue straight on immediately afterwards. The track ends shortly afterwards at a dead end overgrown with vegetation leading towards the Ravine des Roches: cross the ravine and take the path that starts opposite, on the other side of the ravine.
(5) Cross a field of sugarcane to reach the Chemin de la Ligne d’Équerre. Turn right. During the climb, enjoy beautiful views towards the Dimitile, the Chaîne du Bois de Nèfles, the Piton Hyacinthe and the coastline towards Étang-Salé les Bains.
(6) At the first junction, turn right onto Ruelle Cormoran (signposted).
(7) At the end of the lane, turn left onto Chemin Leopold Brabant and walk past some beautiful birds of paradise (plants). More stunning views unfold during this final stretch of the climb.
At the end of the path, turn right and then immediately left. The hardest part is over. You’ll then pass between the houses of the peaceful hamlet of La Ligne d’Équerre. Follow the path to the sign indicating ‘sentier’ on the right: turn into a lane and then turn left onto the first footpath.
(8) Turn right at the first junction and begin a circular route through the beautiful Ligne d’Équerre forest. From there, keep to the right at every junction until you have crossed the third ravine. Cross the first ravine. When you reach the second ravine, descend it for a few metres to rejoin the path on the right bank. The trees are magnificent! Many are endemic or native species such as the rampart tree, the slender tree and the jamrosades! This forest is teeming with these trees, and it’s a real pleasure not to see any plant pests or invasive species. Some might even be in the running for the title of the most beautiful tree!
When you reach the ravine for the third time: rejoin the path opposite and keep left at the next junction. Then keep right until you reach the crossroads at the end of the circular route.
(8) Leave this magnificent forest and return to the previous path. Follow it to the right and, at the end of the road, cross the wooded area. On your left is the church of La Ligne d’Équerre.
You’ll come to a road (Chemin de la Ligne d’Équerre) and follow it to the right. The descent is gentle, with superb views of the surrounding countryside. You’ll reach the crossroads leading to the village of La Ligne d’Équerre.
(6) Return to the path and continue to the Ligne d’Équerre crossroads you passed earlier.
(5) Take the road on the right; before leaving it, you’ll pass a strawberry field (on the right).
(9) Follow the road to letterbox number 40 (on the left-hand side of the road). Take the track that branches off to the right of the letterbox.
(10) Count two bends, then pass a house (on the right) and turn onto the first track on the right. Head towards the junction leading to Bérive-les-Hauts.
(3) Turn right and carry on straight ahead at each junction until you reach the road: then follow it to the right. Continue to the Piton Nathalie junction.
(2) Follow the same path as on the way there. Keep to the right at every junction.
You will then reach the football pitch: go round it on the right and return to your car via the route you took on the way there (S/E)
