Description of the walk

Park near the town hall in Saint-Vincent-de-Barrès.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, head left, then take the road on the left that runs behind the village and follow the path opposite the fountain. After a small bridge, you’ll reach a junction.

(1) Continue left along this tarmac road and, at the junction, turn right to pass through the hamlet of Vignal. Walk past it to reach the crossroads in front of Martin.

(2) Take the road on the right that climbs up to the hamlet of Tinteron and follow it to a dead end where there is a small stony path through the pine trees.

(3) Take this stony path, lined with pine and holm oak trees, which climbs for quite some time, until you reach a wide forest track; follow it to the right. Pass under the power line. This will take you to another track, directly beneath a power line.

(4) Follow this track and theGR®42to the right for 250 metres, until you reach the Col de Duranne, directly beneath another power line.

(5) Leave the track and theGR® and head down the steep little path to the Duranne farm.

(6) Cross the tarmac road and join the path leading uphill opposite, past the picnic tables. It is signposted: “educational site, Ubac trail”. About 200 m further on, the path splits; take the right-hand path up towards the electricity pylon and join the junction and a forest track at the Col des Esterpau (panoramic view).

(7) Follow the forest track to the right until you reach the junction with other tracks and the GR®.

(8) Leave the forest tracks and theGR® to head down opposite, along a small path through the forest.
A little further on, there is an unobstructed view of the valley, the village of Saint-Vincent-de-Barrès and the Andance mountain. After a long descent and several hairpin bends, pass between two fields and reach the first junction on the outward journey.

(1) Turn left and follow the path back in the opposite direction to the outward journey to return to the starting point of the hike (S/E).

A pleasant route. One caveat, however: at the top of the Col de la Duranne, when you are under the high-voltage power line, take the path on the left (not signposted). At the next fork, take the left-hand path again, which descends to the Duranne farm. Then continue as planned.

A fairly well-signposted route
At point 8, turn sharply right before the barrier (part of the forest has been cleared) to rejoin the path further down

A brilliant walk. Just a quick note: at point 8, the path down isn’t very visible; it’s right at the foot of the green fence.

At the start, after a grassy section, there are about 2 km of tarmac. Not recommended in the middle of the day in the height of summer.
The rest of the route is mostly shaded. After the Duranne farm, you’ll pass through a preserved beech forest in St-Vincent.
No difficulty, apart from a section with large stones on the final descent. Just watch your step to protect your ankles ;-))
