Start from the Greffière car park situated beside the D1005 road (between Les Dappes and La Vattay).
(S/E) Take the track suitable for vehicles heading north-east. At thefirst junction (elevation 1280), keep left. Shortly afterwards, you’ll cross the French-Swiss border. You’ll come to a small road.
(1) Follow it to the right, heading due east, until you reach the next junction.
(2) Carry on straight ahead. Pass the hamlets of Grand Sonnailley and then Petit Senailley on your right, and follow the border until you reach a junction with a path branching off to the left.
(3) Carry on to the left, following the sign for La Dôle, until you reach a path branching off to the right.
(4) Take this path on the right, which climbs uphill (signposted towards La Dôle), until you reach a Fork in the road.
(5) Take the path on the right (ignore the sign pointing directly to La Dôle on the left). After a slight bend, head up a valley until you reach its end (north-east). Then pass a wall via a small, cleared passage (marked in red) and you’ll soon join another path.
(6) Continue to the right (yellow markings). Head downhill to the bottom of a small valley. You will then reach the vicinity of some buildings (Chalet de la Dôle and the lower station of the Dôle cable car).
(7) Turn left towards the Chalet des Apprentis. At the junction shortly afterwards, turn left again, towards the Col de Porte and La Dôle. Climb up some fairly steep slopes, heading north-west, to reach the Col de Porte.
(8) Take thefirst path on the left, towards La Dôle. Shortly afterwards, carry on straight ahead at the junction, following a path up a fairly steep slope, and join the ridge.
(9) Follow the ridge southwards and, via a steady climb, reach the summit of La Dôle, crowned by its easily recognisable ‘big balloon’ (orientation table, panoramic views over Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc).
(10) From the summit, there are two options:
- Head back a little way (north) and turn left straight away.
- As shown on the map, continue southwards to the last building. Then turn right twice to go round the buildings, climbing a few steps along the way.
In both cases, head down towards the arrival area of the Dôle chairlift, which is clearly visible.
(11) Then carry on straight ahead (north) along a wide path. Descend gently for a while until you reach a Y-junction.
(12) Head slightly to the left. The slope becomes steeper. Ignore a path coming from the right and continue north-west. Join another path and follow it to the left. Then look out for a path on the left.
(13) Follow it (no signposts). Head slightly uphill and ignore the turn-off to the left for the Chalet de Reculet Dessus. Head towards the chairlift pylons until you are directly below the chairlift line.
(14) Turn off to the left and head uphill beneath the cable line for a few dozen metres. Then turn off to the right and follow a pleasant path through woodland for quite some time, heading south-west. You’ll come to some pastures and reach the Chalet de Sonnailley au Prince (please make sure you close the gates properly behind you).
(15) Continue south-west along a small road and return to a junction you passed on the way there.
(2) Carry on to the right for about 250 m uphill.
(1) Follow a path to the left which leads back to the Greffière car park (S/E).
