The ridge of the Pointe de Faule

The stunning, seemingly endless ridge of the Pointe de Faule with its myriad views, the Peïra Cava forest renowned for its tall, mixed-species trees, anda walk through the abandoned 17th-century village of Béasse, uninhabited since 1930, are all part of this challenging hike.
A few short technical and exposed sections; the Visorando app may prove useful

Description of the walk

Coming from Nice, park along the old barracks located at the entrance to Peïra Cava.

(S/E) Walk back a few steps to the crossroads. Then take the stone steps leading down to the tarmac road known as the ‘Chemin de la table d’orientation’. There is little or no traffic on this road, but please remain vigilant.

(1) Walk past marker 118 and continue towards the orientation table.

(2) At the crossroads with a stone building, turn left, heading due west. Walk past this building, built in 1876, which has a vaulted stone ceiling. A small stone slope leads up to the orientation tables.

(3) At the first orientation table, enjoy the view. Look to the right to see the rest of the route along the ridge. Head towards a second orientation table by pushing open the small wooden gate and taking the iron staircase. Then retrace your steps.

(2) Turn left onto the track leading down throughspruce, pine, fir, larch and beech trees.

(4) After a long descent, walk past the pumping station and continue straight on up this steep slope to reach the hamlet of Les Granges du Lac.

(5) At the Peïra Cava Aventures site (treetop adventure course), stayon the path. Follow the signs for “Sentier pédestre”, pass to the left of the chalet serving as the reception for Peïra Cava Aventures and continue along the path.

(6) At the crossroads of paths, just after the stream, turn left onto the ascending path which runs alongside a first set of ruins in the middle of the meadows. Then the path disappears. Head towards the second set of ruins.

(7) Before reaching these ruins, turn right into a small grassy pass and head into the woods. A path lies a few metres below. Once on this path, turn left.

(8) At the crossroads of paths, turn left. The path soon gives way to the ridge line , which begins with a long slab and ends at an old stone observatory. This ridge line is sawtooth-shaped. Each ‘tooth’—there are about ten of them—is an easily accessible promontory offering remarkable views. Some can be easily climbed down; otherwise, each high point has a way down, very often a path on the right.

(9) At Pointe de la Faule, continue along the ridge. Views to the right over the hamlets of Camari and Saint-Colomban. A few short sections of path are visible.

(10) At the junction with a yellow-marked path, turn left. (Follow these yellow markings to the finish.)

(11) At marker 167, Baisse de Béasse, 800 m, turn left towards Béasse.

(12) Walk through the ruins and past the last houses of the village of Béasse, along the paved slanting street.

(13) You’ll come to a picnic spot with a stone table.

(14) Pass a 17th-century stone wash house and continue along this long, winding, wooded path.

(15) At marker 119, a crossroads of paths, turn left towards Peïra Cava direct. Hang in there, as a 600-metre climb begins here. This forest path, with its large stones, runs alongside a stream that provides a refreshing breeze.

(1) At marker 118, turn right and carefully follow the tarmac road known as Chemin de l'Observatoire; immediately afterwards, take the steps on the left to reach Boulevard du Général Vial, which leads back to the car park (S/E).

This hike is absolutely stunning but physically demanding. The initial stretch past the pumping station isn’t exactly straightforward – the route along the ridge is magnificent – but be warned: it involves a fair bit of scrambling, and the path isn’t always visible, no doubt due to the spring season and the lush vegetation.
On the other hand, the views are breathtaking. The final 600-metre climb is gruelling, especially if you’re running low on water!
In any case, an experience I’d recommend to experienced walkers

This is a beautiful hike in a little-visited area that takes us through beautiful forests with stunning 360° views.
The hike requires sure footing as the ridge crossing includes a few tricky sections. It is also quite strenuous as there is a 500 m elevation gain over the last 2 kilometres.
All in all, I thought it was a superb hike!
