La Chaumardie, Château Caussade and Lanmary

A very pleasant eight-shaped hike with two successive circular loops: wooded paths, few roads, châteaux.

Description of the walk

Go to La Chaumardie, between Trélissac and Champcevinel. In a bend in a small valley (elevation 130), pass a small car park with a wooden hiking sign: on the left from Champcevinel, on the right from Trélissac. Take the road that starts there and quickly turns into a track. Shortly afterwards, park in the car park on the left with hiking signs in the corner and a sign for "Route de Puyconteau".

(S/E) Leave the track on your right that climbs towards "boucle de Puyconteau". Shortly afterwards, leave theGR®® which climbs to the right and continue straight ahead, following the signs for "boucle de Caussade" and the yellow markings. Continue straight ahead until you reach a T-junction, where you turn right to quickly reach a road.
(1) Turn right and then immediately left onto Chemin du Château de Caussade: Caussade circular route and yellow markings. Note that after the last houses, on the right, there is a surprising 35 km/h speed limit sign for a path! Arrive at Château Caussade (private).

GR®® yellow, white and red markings

(2) Take the path on the left: information sign about the history of the château and reach the next crossroads.

(3) Continue on the main path, which turns right. You will come to a road at a place called La Croix du Rat, where several paths intersect.

(4) Walk a few metres to the left on the road, then turn immediately right. The path descends into the woods. At the crossroads, go straight ahead (GR®® markings on a tree) and you will reach Château de Lanmary, a rehabilitation hospital and nursing home. Continue along the road.

(5) At the car park, turn left. Find the road you crossed at La Croix du Rat, cross it again and continue straight ahead. A little further on, you will rejoin the route you were already following.

(3) Continue straight ahead on the track and arrive at Château Caussade.

(2) Turn left and then immediately right in front of the château entrance. Shortly afterwards, leave the main path on your left and take the path opposite, following the signposts. Turn right after a short climb and you will reach a fork in the path.

(6) Take the path that descends to the left. At the next crossroads, first turn left then right, ignoring the Fontaines circular loop. You will reach Route de la Gavinie and Route de la Lauterie.

(7) Continue right onto Route de la Lauterie and follow it to the end. Note the Château de Lauterie on your right: 17th-century main building, 15th-century towers. At the crossroads, take a busy road on the left for about 100 metres, then turn right onto Chemin des Hauts Gourdoux. At the top, ignore the first road on the left and continue to the next junction, located after passing No. 8.

(8) Turn left, then quickly turn right onto the path. At the next fork, ignore the path on the right that you took at the start and turn left to descend to the car park (S/E).

Hello, even with the app, it's just very poorly signposted. There are no signs, and without the app it's almost impossible.

There were errors in the description and we even had to use a compass at times to find the trail described; no matter, I am an experienced hiker.
This hike is easy and feels more like a walk in the forest than a hike... Nothing serious, though. It was pleasant, but there's nothing remarkable to report!

I understand better now. Indeed, it is the place where the "8" shape intersects, and that can be confusing. Thank you for your reply. I hope it will prevent others from getting lost.
Kind regards

Hello,
This is in front of Caussade Castle, point 2 in the description.
With the app, you may need to turn right from the castle, taking the path after the circular loop at Lanmary Castle.
Kind regards.

Thank you for your message. The hike is indeed enjoyable and easy.
However, I am surprised by the incorrect directions. Could you specify the problematic areas, if you remember them, for the benefit of other hikers?
Kind regards

This hike is magnificent and not particularly difficult. It takes us along wooded paths that must be very pleasant in summer.
The three castles are beautiful.
The only downside was that some of the signposts forced us to turn back, but it was no big deal.
