Eyvirat loop

A fairly long but easy hike: the slopes are gentle and the elevation gain is moderate. There are some beautiful wooded sections, mainly towards the end, and a few views of the rolling countryside, but there are also some paved sections that can be a bit long.

Description of the walk

You can park in front of the church in Eyvirat (in the commune of Brantôme in Périgord) or in the car park below in the village.

(S/E) The starting point is at the information board about walks opposite the church. Take the road that runs alongside the church and then climbs uphill.

(1) At the top, at the cross, take the path on the right.

(2) At the junction with the Eyvirat road to Agonac, turn left and then right to take the DFCI track towards Puybrandau (Puei brandau, in Occitan: the heather mountain). Then, at the T-junction, turn left. At the next crossroads, leave the road to Agonac on your left and continue right towards "Boucle d'Eyvirat". Pass near Buffier, whose entrance is marked by two kilometre markers. The road becomes a small paved road that descends to the D69, which connects Agonac to Brantôme.

(3) Turn left at the stop sign. Caution: poor visibility and busy road. Continue for a few dozen metres and turn right onto the Chemin de Haute-Faye (faia in Occitan: beech) and Puychassier. At Puychassier, leave the road to Haute Faye on your right and continue left.

(4) At a wooden shed, turn right onto the road. The road descends and passes between farm buildings.

(5) Turn right before the farm. The road descends to the Route des Mosaïques. Follow it to the left.

(6) Shortly after, turn right onto Route Blanche.

(7) Before reaching the hamlet of Lapinelie, ignore the road to Puy-de-Fourches and take the road on the right towards "Boucle d'Eyvirat". The road joins the hamlet of Ménesplé (menesplier in Occitan: medlar tree) and becomes a road. Continue downhill to the junction with Route des Mosaïques.

(8) Turn left and continue along the road. At the junction with the D69, turn left again and continue for a few hundred metres. Be careful, the road is still very busy!

(9) Turn right onto Route de Bigot. In the first bend, leave the road that climbs up to Bigot on your right and take the path opposite that runs alongside a fence. The signpost is on the ground: be careful, it's easy to miss! At the junction with a road, continue left.

(10) Take the path on the left, 150 m before an intersection. Just after, at the junction with a road, cross carefully and continue on the path opposite. At the junction with a road, turn left, then right at the "Give Way" sign.

(11) At the crossroads with the D74, take the road opposite that runs alongside a wood. The road turns at a right angle to the left, then climbs straight up to Lescuras (escura in Occitan: barn or clearing). Turn right before the buildings and continue to a road. Follow it to the left.

(12) Shortly after, leave the road and take a path on the right: be careful, it's easy to miss! At the road, at the corner of a hedge of thuja trees and a wall, turn left. Continue to the hamlet of Puyzaraux. Pass the Route de l'Élevage on your left.

(13) At the exit of the hamlet, at the Route de l'Élevage and the "Cul Noir du Périgord" farm, turn left, not onto the Route de l'Élevage, but onto a small paved section that branches off at an angle and quickly turns into a path that runs along the top of a vegetable garden: Be careful again! It's easy to miss! Continue on flat ground until you enter a wood. Cross the road you left earlier and continue straight ahead on the path.

(14) When you reach the road, turn right twice to continue on a path through the woods. At a crossroads, leave the road to La Chapelle-Faucher on your left and turn right towards "Boucle d'Eyvirat". In the hamlet of Piras, leave a path leading to the houses on your left and continue right on a path that descends towards a field. In the field, turn left, then left again onto the road. Turn right onto Route des Moutons in the direction of "Piras Haut".

(15) Turn right onto the path opposite house no. 177 and follow it along a wall. At a T-junction near a wood, turn right.

(16) At the road, opposite a grey gate at no. 1472, continue straight ahead on Chemin du Lavoir. Go around the buildings on the right and pass close to the wash house (not maintained). At the road, turn right.

(17) At the "Give Way" sign, cross carefully and continue straight ahead towards Eyvirat on Route Élie Bouthier. After the cemetery, turn left towards "Puylafaye". (You can continue on the same road to reach your destination more quickly.)

(18) Take the path that branches off to the right after passing a gate. Descend into a wood, follow an orchard and then a fence. You will arrive at the church at the top (S/E).
