Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the entrance to the village, near the station. The information board for the walks is located there.

(S/E) Turn right onto the main street (Rue d’Angoulême) which leads up into the village. It offers a view of the castle, the construction of which began in the 14th century and which served both as a fortress to monitor the road from Périgueux to Angoulême and as the summer residence of the bishops of Périgueux. After the bridge over the D939 and opposite the town hall, take the street on the right towards the school.

(1) After the school, turn left onto Chemin de Boulanger. At the T-junction, turn left onto Chemin de la Monnerie.

(2) Immediately take a path on the right (yellow marker). After about 500 m, leave the path leading to some houses (not shown on the map) and turn right onto a path that climbs and joins a road.

(3) Take a path on the left towards the memorial to 29 March 1944. This is located a little further on the left and commemorates the murder of four people by the Nazis. When you reach Route de Mesplier, continue straight ahead and reach a crossroads.

(4) Continue straight ahead, leaving the Route de la Picou on your right and the Impasse des Cerisiers on your left. After about 1 km, pass the Impasse des Payants on your right and continue to the crossroads at the hamlet of Bois Blancs.

(5) Pass the junction for Sencena-Puy-de-Fourches straight ahead, and turn right onto Route du Coteau. Then pass Impasse des Bois-Blancs on your right. At the next crossroads, pass Impasse de la Couturie on your left and continue to the right. Shortly afterwards, pass Impasse de l’Aubède on your right.

(6) On the descent, after a black gate and before a left-hand bend, take the path on the left (yellow marker) which starts almost directly behind you: Be careful, this junction is easy to miss! After a short tarmac section, take a path on the left. Pass close to a riding school then turn right onto a path which further on becomes a tarmac road. Leave the access path to Gros Chêne on your left and head straight down until you reach a main road (Route des Étangs). Turn right, then leave the Chemin de Blédat and the link to Agonac on your left. Continue towards the “Circular Route of Preyssac” and reach Plaisance.

(7) At the end of the fence, take the path on the left. At the T-junction with a bench opposite, turn left.

(8) At the junction with a slightly wider path, turn right. Shortly afterwards, the main path turns right and descends; take the path opposite. Continue straight on for a long way, ignoring several side paths (yellow markings present), until you reach the top of Preyssac. Be careful not to miss the fork to the left of the main path, which descends to the hamlet and becomes a road at the first house.

(9) At the crossroads, cross carefully and take Rue Antoine Peyssard straight ahead. At the first bend, take a small alleyway straight ahead between two houses, which leads out behind the 12th-century Romanesque church. Then turn left onto Route de la Bayolle. After crossing the Beauronne, which flows into the Isle at the Gour de l’Arche in Périgueux, turn right towards the Peyssard fountain, then cross the Périgueux–Limoges railway line. Walk up the road opposite for about fifty metres.

(10) Turn left onto the steeply ascending path. Pass a private track on your right. When you reach the gate, go through the small gate on the right for pedestrians, taking care to close it properly: there is a pond on the left. You will emerge onto the access road to Peyssard: there is a memorial stone on the left in tribute to François Thoraval, who was murdered by French members of the Gestapo.

(11) Continue straight ahead, taking the pedestrian crossing to the right of the gate. Then follow the fence and exit on the other side through an identical gate. Pass the sign for Périgueux–Trélissac on your left and continue straight ahead. After the last house, the tarmac gives way to limestone, reappearing further on. The road passes close to a wayside cross, the twelfth station of the Stations of the Cross at Château-l’Évêque. Continue along the road.

(12) At a bend, take the path on the right. Then turn right just after a barn, head for a car park, then the roundabout on the Angoulême road (D939). Cross carefully, head towards the village and return to the starting car park (S/E).

A lovely walk in the Dordogne with two fairly steep climbs, but otherwise very accessible terrain.
The description is accurate and this walk is fully marked with yellow signs, which makes it easy to follow.
Well done
