The Chapel of Saint-Sébastien and the Rocher du Gueit, starting from Brignoles

A walk combining town and countryside with a visit to old Brignoles, a stroll through the vineyards, then a walk through Camps-la-Source, a pretty little Provençal village, the climb to the Chapelle Saint-Sébastien and, above all, the lovely view from the Rocher du Gueit.

Description of the walk

The route starts from a free car park located between the Chemin de Saint-Sumian and the Boulevard des Voutes, which can be reached via Avenue Frédéric Mistral and the old road from La Celle to Brignoles (83). Look for the Les Voutes car park.

(S/E) Join and followChemin de Saint-Sumian to the right, heading north.

(1) Turn left onto Traverse Saint-Sumian, then turn immediately right, pass in front of the Chapelle des Cordeliers and continue straight on to pass under the Porte Saint-François. Continue along Rue du Palais, then turn right towards Place des Comtes de Provence, which is clearly visible between two buildings. The Palace of the Counts of Provence is currently undergoing renovation. Head up Rue des Lanciers to the right, heading north. Turn right into Rue des Portaniers, then left into the second street and right into Rue Trinité. Turn right into a small side street leading to Place Saint-Pierre.

(2) Turn right into Rue de l’Hôpital, cross Cours de la Liberté to take Avenue de Lattre de Tassigny. The tour of old Brignoles can, of course, be adapted to suit individual tastes and preferences.

(3) After walking 1,500 m along the avenue, turn left onto Chemin de Pélicon, cross Route de Camps with care and continue almost directly opposite along the path of the same name. Follow it for 2 km, ignoring any ‘road closed’ sign that has been out of date for some time.

(4) Head up the right-hand side and continue straight on, ignoring a few turn-offs on either side of the track.

(5) Turn right onto Chemin de Pourraque. You will reach the D12; cross it carefully and follow it to the left for 50 m.

(6) Take Chemin des Coulettes on the right, going against the flow of traffic for 100 m. Proceed with caution, but there are very few cars.

(7) Turn right onto Chemin Neuf, then left 100 m further on. Reach Grande Rue via a small side street on the left. Pass the town hall and the church and continue straight ahead. Go up Rue du Marronnier on the right, then left onto Rue du Château.

(8) Take Chemin de Saint-Sébastien on the right. The climb is steep but fairly short.

(9) At the chapel, continue left along the ridge towards the west. The path is a bit of a rollercoaster but isn’t too difficult to follow, even if it is sometimes hard to make out. Continue like this for 1,500 m. You’ll reach the Rocher du Gueit and its information board.

(10) Continue to the next fork, about 700 m away.

(11) Head down to the right onto the PR®.

(12) Turn left and continue the descent. You will reach the Chemin du Puits de Fassy; continue for 800 m to reach the Voutes car park (S/E).
