Description of the walk

Start from Larringes church (parking at the edge of a small square behind the church). Access from Évian-les-Bains or Thonon-les-Bains via the Carrefour de l’X, then via the D11 and the D32.

Signposts are located at major junctions. You will cross or follow several marked trails: trail markings are only mentioned where necessary.

(S/E) Head south and downhill towards Féternes, passing the town hall and then the fire station on your right. Cross a stream and, at the Fork in the road that appears immediately, take the right-hand path. Just before the health centre, turn right onto the Sentier du Maravant (marked in red and yellow). Go through a gate and follow a shaded path alongside the stream. Go through a second gate and continue through a wood. Leave the wood and carry on along the edge of a meadow, still following the stream.

(1) At the end of the path (signpost ‘La Grange aux Loups’), turn left twice towards Rippe (signpost with yellow arrows). Follow a wide gravel path as it climbs gently. At the “Les Grands Champs” signpost, cross a small road and follow a stony path opposite (MTB signpost no. 6), continuing to climb gently.

(2) At the three-way junction, veer to the right, passing a livestock building on your left. Follow a good, shaded path on level ground and ignore a path branching off to the left (not shown on IGN maps). Further on, ignore the path on the left leading to the clearly visible Rippe farm and continue straight on towards Chez Divoz. Head up a stony path which soon gives way to tarmac.

(3) You’ll come out onto a road; follow it to the right, keeping to the right-hand verge, which is protected by bollards. At an old fire station, turn left to cross the road and take the Route de Champeillant. Walk through the hamlet and continue straight on, following the road uphill.

(4) At the next junction, carry on straight ahead and uphill along the road, using the designated pedestrian area wherever possible (take care). This will take you to the Champeillant Chapel.

(5) Continue along the road and, at the junction you’ll soon come to, turn left to reach an orientation table (offering sweeping views).

(6) Retrace your steps back to the chapel.

(5) Continue down the road (same advice as on the way up).

(4) Take thefirst road on the right, which has very little traffic and winds its way through the meadows. At the Stop sign, cross the road at right angles and follow it carefully to the left, keeping to the right-hand verge (which is wider than the left-hand one). You will soon reach the Chapelle de Chez Portay.

(7) Take a short detour to the right, down Impasse de la Chapelle, to admire a beautiful old house on the right-hand side.

(7) On your return, continue along the main road and, when you reach a drinking trough on the left-hand side, turn right onto Chemin de Larringes. Follow this small road until you reach a junction with a signpost.

(8) Carry on straight ahead along the road, taking the only direction not indicated on the signpost. Walk gently downhill through the meadows. Further on, you’ll cross the Allée de la Dent d’Oche on your left at the three-way junction. At the three-way junction that follows, turn right, cross the stream again and head uphill to quickly reach the church at Larringes (S/E).

Notes

Good walking shoes are sufficient for this walk, which takes place on good paths and quiet country lanes. In summer, make sure you bring suitable sun protection.

No water points identified along the route. Mini-market in Larringes (S/E).

A detailed map is required (at the very least, the one accompanying this description).

The author has completed this walk three times, the first on 26 July 2019 and the last on 5 August 2023.

A lovely, easy walk. The view from the chapel at the end of the walk is magnificent. There are picnic tables available. It’s truly enchanting.

An excellent description of this rather nice route, with a very interesting finish at the summit (chapel and information boards). But it was very crowded at that point, with people who’d driven there (I counted 14).
