Description of the route

Start near the Belfort water sports centre at Étang des Forges, Rue Auguste Bussière.
Please take care as the area is very popular with locals; there are many walkers, pushchairs and children’s bikes on the first 300 metres.

Mountain bike route no. 10

(S/E) With your back to the lake, head left and follow the lake for about 400 m until you reach a fork.

(1) Just past the water sports centre car park, turn right and follow the allotments. Turn right onto a small path that crosses a copse, then right again until you reach the crossroad (D43).

(2) Cross it carefully and head up the path opposite. After 30 m, turn left and climb slightly to reach the D46 again at the exit from Offemont.

(3) Caution! This is a dangerous spot; cross the D46 with care.
First turn left then right and follow the path downhill for about 500 m.

(4) Dismount to visit the Chérimont Maquis monument.
Return to the main path and continue through the Bromont Forest.
Look out for a blockhouse and turn left. 100 m further on, turn right and then cross the Ruisseau de la Femme. Cross the Grands Champs and arrive at Rue du Paquis in Vétrigne, at a four-way junction.

(5) Turn left onto Rue de la Versenne and follow the Voie Verte. Passthe school, taking particular care during peak times at the start and end of the school day. 200 m after the school, turn right onto Rue des Grands Champs. Turn right onto Grand-Rue and then take the grassy path, blocked by boulders, on the left, Chemin de la Creuse Vie. This will take you to Rue du Fort.

(6) Follow it to the right for about 600 m and, when it turns right, at the bend, turn completely left and follow a path that climbs into the Bois de Vétrigne. Continue until you reach a road and follow it down to the left to the roundabout.

(7) Turn left and follow the main road, Rue Aristide Briand, for 20 m, then turn right onto Rue des Cerisiers, towards the Monument du Maquis du Chérimont. At the next junction, turn right onto Rue Étienne Welsch, onto the Voie Verte, and continue straight on until you reach another roundabout.

(8) Just before you reach it, turn left onto the footpath and then left again onto Rue Charles de Gaulle. Pass two streets on your left and you’ll come to a T-junction at No. 19.

(9) Then turn left onto Allée des Charmilles, continue for 100 m and turn right, opposite No. 3b, onto a path leading to the Étang des Forges.
Turn right, following the edge of the lake, then 200 m further on, turn right again and walk alongside the campsite on your left. Join a side street.

(10) Turn left onto this road, pass the entrance to the campsite, and continue along the pond to the Étang des Forges water sports centre (S/E).

For a first time on a mountain bike, I didn’t find it all that “easy”—there was far more elevation gain than I’d expected (almost double by the finish). Apart from that, the rest of the route was quite nice through the forest.
