Description of the walk

For parking, head to the village of Villiers-aux-Bois, a partner municipality. Coming from Wassy, turn left onto Chemin de l’Abbaye, past a farm on your left. Continue along this track, which takes you to the entrance to the woods where you can park.

Totem signs indicate all directions.

(S/E) Continue along the Chemin de l’Abbaye, heading north-east.

(1) At the junction, carry on straight ahead, cross the Tranche de l’Essartie and follow the path opposite.

(2) Further on, take the path on the right marked with green markings on the trees.

(3) After 200 m, take the track on the left, past a hunting lodge on the right, and continue straight on along this track until you reach a white track.

(4) Turn left onto this white track. At the junction of the three white tracks, you’ll find the Maison des Maquisards. Continue straight ahead along the grassy track.

(5) Turn right onto the white track for 220 m, then turn left and carry on to the Belle Maison, a former hunting lodge of the Princes of Guise.

(6) Turn left onto the grassy track marked by theGR®14B(signpost on the right on a tree); follow it until you reach a white track, then follow it to the left.

(7) Turn right onto a grassy stretch which leads you onto a white track, after crossing another white track that does not appear on the IGN 25 map.

(8) Turn left, then carry on straight ahead to reach the junction you passed on the way out at the very start of the route.

(1) Turn right and return to the car park (S/E).

What a shame, what a shame, what a shame! A magnificent forest, but what an ordeal! The paths at the start (about 2 km) are completely rutted by logging machinery. Then there are dirt tracks churned up by wild boars, and finally a GR trail that seemed to us to be completely neglected…

So it’s not Coquelicot56’s work that’s to blame, but perhaps we should put this walk on ‘hold’ until better days come!

Well done on this route, which allows us to explore the maquisards’ house and the beautiful house. What’s more, around 80 per cent of the route follows lovely, shaded paths.
