(S/E) Leave the central square of Prébois by heading north on the departmental road that crosses the village. Walk past the church and, a little further on, take the D253 on the left towards Saint-Maurice-en-Trièves. You will see yellow markings. Cross the "plain" along a long straight stretch, keeping to the left of the road. As you cross, you will already enjoy a 360° view of the mountains. At the end of the straight stretch, when the road turns left, take a wide track on the right.
(1) Very quickly, take a discreet path that descends to the left and returns to the departmental road. Descend to the right. Cross the first bridge over the Ébron. Shortly afterwards, turn left (wooden sign with the inscription "Moulin de Recours").
(2) Shortly before the mill, you will see a sign pointing towards "Moulin de Recours". Go up to the right towards Chamelouve, crossing the Bois des Gones. After a fairly long walk, ignore the first stony path that branches off to the left. Very soon after, you will see the sign for "Chantelouve - alt. 785m".
(3) Turn left towards Mont l'Heaut, following a stream.
(4) Further on, take a track on the right. You will come to a sign for "Mont l'Heaut - alt. 730 m".
(5) Continue straight ahead towards Les Adrets.
(6) You will arrive at the sign for "Les Adrets - alt. 785 m". Continue straight ahead towards Avers. Descend and pass through the hamlet of Pied-Gros. Ignore a narrow lane that branches off between two houses at a circular section of the road.
(7) Go back up and ignore two paths on the left (there is a bench at the second one). Quickly take a path that goes up to the left to reach the hamlet of Avers. Cross the D66 and take Rue de la Chapelle opposite.
(8) Once you reach it, turn left. At the end of the hamlet, continue straight ahead along a stone path that leads to the D216a. You will see a sign with a large number 26 on it.
(9) Turn right towards "La Cabane". Very quickly, turn left onto a discreet grassy path that descends. You will come out onto another road (D216), which you will also take on the right. Take the first path on the left. You will come out onto a road, and on your left you will see the second bridge over the Ébron.
(10) Just before the bridge, on the right, there is a picnic table. Cross the bridge to enter the hamlet.
(11) In the middle of the hamlet, just before a circular, you will see a sign on the right indicating "Prébois 6.3 km". Go up Chemin des Clos. You will come to a house. Go up on the left. And off you go for a fairly steep 220 m climb over 1.7 km. Further on, you come to a track which you take on the left. Even further on, at a fork, you take the right-hand path (always follow the yellow markings). You come to a sign saying "Daniel - alt. 950 m".
(12) Turn left towards Prébois (4.1 km). At a fork, take the left-hand path. Cross the D66. You will see a sign for "Col du Banchet - alt. 900 m". At this point, you will have what I consider to be the most beautiful view of the walk (but that's subjective...).
(13) Continue along the rocky track opposite, towards Prébois (3.4 km).
(14) At a fork, take the less obvious path on the right (towards the bench). Continue north-west until you reach a road (D254A).
(15) Follow it to the left. You will arrive at the Prébois cemetery and turn right to enter the village and return to your starting point (S/E).
The Trièves region is very beautiful. At point 1, we did not take the trail; we preferred to take the road that goes around it. At point 11, we continued on the road because the storm was closing in on us and we even got caught in a light shower. We shortened the route by taking a small detour that climbs steeply and arrives at point 14, still covering 17 km with a 380 m elevation gain. For us, there was a bit too much tarmac road, but there was no traffic and we didn't see anyone else on this route.
