Description of the walk

(S) Setting off from the Fauge shelter, continue along the same path as the previous day to reach Les Glovettes.

(1) Join theGR®91just past the shops at the first hairpin bend in the road, following signs for Corrençon-en-Vercors. There are approximately 5km of paths alternating between footpaths, tarmac roads and through hamlets until you reach Corrençon.

(2) Stay on theGR®91, pass through Les Rambins and head towards the golf course. From there, there are few signposts, so you must be vigilant and ensure you stay on theGR®91, marked in red and white. Pass successively by Le Clariant and La Croix de la Messe, the 45th parallel, and La Porte Barnier, to reach La Cabane de Carrette.

(3) Continue along theGR® through the woods until you emerge into the Darbounouse meadow.

(4) Turn south and continue along theGR®91, following the cairns to leave the meadow and reach the Pas de la Chèvre crossroads.

(5) Continue south and pass the Pot du Play.

(6) Keep following theGR®, pass through the Canyon des Erges to reach Tiolache du Haut.

(7) Continue along theGR® and follow an almost flat path to reach the Jasse du Play shelter, where you can also camp in a tent or sleep in the shelter (E).

Hello, I’m the author of this walk.
You have two options for buying food:
1. The small mini-market in Les Glovettes – you’ll inevitably pass it if you follow the route.
2. In the village of Corrençon, there is a mini-market and a few shops.
After the Corrençon golf course, there will be nothing else and you’ll be on the high plateaus of the Vercors.
I hope this has been helpful.
Enjoy your hike.

Hello,

I’m planning to go on this hike very soon, at the end of September. Are there any places where I can stock up on food (so I don’t have to carry all my food at the start of the hike)?

Thanks!
Joachim

I completed the Vercors Crossing in four stages... this is the second one... the section from Villars-de-Lans to Correncon is a bit of a let-down... up to just above the golf course... it’s actually a tarmac stretch with little to offer... but what follows is lovely...

Please note: this is the toughest day of the whole trip. We set off from the Roybon hut, where we’d spent the night. Stock up on food at Les Glovettes (you can also do this in Corrençon). Make absolutely sure you get water at Corrençon – at least 2.5 litres per person. We had to ration ours because it was very hot and we had to last the whole day without finding another source.
The Carrette spring, which is marked on IGN maps, has been dry for about ten years. Don’t count on it. There really is no place to refill water between Corrençon and the Jasse du Play shelter, which is why this stage is so long.
We initially wanted to split the day and sleep between Corrençon and the Jasse du Play, but there isn’t really anywhere to sleep.

The hike is long, exposed to the sun and involves quite a bit of elevation gain over the course of the day.

For us, we set off at 8.30 am from the Cabane de Roybon. Stopped at 10 am in Corrençon to top up supplies. Lunch around 2 pm in Carrette. Arrived in the evening at 7.30 pm at the Jasse du Play, pretty exhausted.

At La Jasse du Play, the spring is still 1km further on. However, the refuge is in a truly stunning spot. Keep going!

We completed this stage in two days, having passed by Lac des Près above Côté 2000.

The stretch from the Hauts Plateaux onwards is exceptional; after passing the Corrençon Golf Course, we came across just one group of hikers, who were returning from the Darbounouses. Otherwise, NOT A SOUL. Absolute calm, almost surreal.

Also, a few points to note:
- It is essential to stock up on water at Corrençon. There are no water sources before Jasse du Play, and it’s a long way.
- A compass and map are essential. Whilst the GR markings are regularly signposted, the ‘yellow signs’ disappear after the Cabane de Carrette.
- Unless you’re reckless, you must avoid straying from the marked trail or IGN-marked routes. There are karstic caves and holes, and you can get lost very quickly. You can only rely on yourself: we didn’t come across a single soul throughout our time on the plateaus.

- Nights can be “very” chilly, even in the summer. We slept at the Pot du Play, where it was -3°C at 6am in May.
- Naturally, you will have no mobile signal once you leave Corrençon. Mobile GPS is highly unreliable in such an area.

It is a place of exceptional beauty (Darbounouse, Canyon des Erges), and the views over the rest of the Vercors and the ridges are unique. Nature reigns supreme; you’ll hear nothing but birds, marmots, roe deer and, if you’re lucky, wolves. Make the most of this place by preparing thoroughly.

The last water point at Golf de Corrençon. The next one is at Jasse du Play. Having spent the night at Les Darbounouzes and walking in the cool of the morning, I needed around 2.5 litres of water.

The crossing of the Vercors began at the Fauge shelter. It was a genuinely tough stretch, with a bit too much of it under the trees. It’s absolutely essential to top up your water supplies at Corrençon, as there are no water sources until the Jasse du Play shelter (contrary to what’s shown on the IGN map).
