Start from the Clots car park in Villard-de-Lans, which is easy to find (it may fill up quickly if you arrive late in the day, but there is plenty of parking nearby).
(S/E) Head due south, following the green and yellow markings towards Pas de l’Œille along a very well-marked forest track. You’ll reach a fork at elevation 1336.
(1) Turn left towards Bergerie de la Fauge.
''The route to Pas de l’Œille is the return route''.
You’ll reach another fork at elevation 1310. On the right is a chalet with a table if you fancy a break.
(2) Continue along the path and cross the pastures. Keep an eye on the clearly visible trail markings. You’ll come to another fork at elevation 1343.
(3) Follow the green and yellow markings to the right. After the pastures, start climbing through the forest and reach a scree slope. The markings are also clearly visible on the scree slope, so keep your eyes peeled.
(4) At the top of the scree slope, head right once again towards Pas de l'Œille, following the clearly visible green and yellow markings. You will reach a fork at an elevation of 1790 metres.
(5) Continue straight ahead, still following the signposted route to Pas de l'Œille, up a rather rocky slope. The markings are still clearly visible, although at times you’ll need to look for them amongst the rocks. After these rocks, keep an eye out: you might spot some ibex on the ridges. You’ll reach the Pas de l’Œille at a junction at an elevation of 1960 metres. Magnificent views and a lovely spot for a break and a picnic.
(6) Continue on your way by taking the path on the right that leads uphill.
Warning: from this point onwards until the Col des Deux Sœurs, the path is unmarked and is classified as dangerous.
I therefore advise you to follow the cliffs as closely as possible and to remain very alert.
You are likely to see ibex and enjoy magnificent views. Stay alert. Some sections may require you to use your hands. You will reach the Col des Deux Sœurs at an altitude of 2056 metres.
(7) Return to the marked paths and follow the sign on the right for Lac de la Moucherolle. Walk along the left side of the lake.
(8) At the end of the lake, follow what appears to be a ski run uphill. Pass under a chalet and the arrival point of the Télésiège des Crêtes.
(9) Continue by passing under the chairlift. Head generally straight down towards Lac des Prés, cutting across fields or slopes.
(10) Continue descending along long stretches through the resort’s slopes. This isn’t the most interesting part of the route. Continue towards Villard on the forest tracks. You’ll easily find the first fork you passed on the way out.
(1) Retrace the first part of the hike in the opposite direction back to the car park (S/E).
