Hardelot-Plage (Neufchâtel-Hardelot) - Étaples

From Hardelot, the trail continues along the beach. It temporarily leaves the beach to cross the Mont Saint-Frieux dune. At Camier, it leaves the coast to join the trail that crosses the Baie de Canche Nature Reserve, offering a beautiful view of the bay. It then descends to the Canche estuary, which it follows up to Étaples.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Le sentier côtier de Bray-Dunes à Étaples

Description of the walk

(S) Start from the seafront promenade at Hardelot-Plage, at the benches opposite the steps leading down to the beach, 100m south of the beach lifeguard station, at the junction with Avenue de la Paix, and head to the southern end of the promenade.

(1) The promenade ends at a road that turns left in front of the surf school and leads to a roundabout. Turn right and take a paved lane that runs along the seafront. At the end of this lane, continue in the same direction along a sandy path that leads to the beach.

(2) Follow the beach. Pass a first group of blockhouses. You will come to groynes and breakwaters and a second group of blockhouses.

(3) Turn left, just before the first blockhouse, onto the Mont-Saint-Frieux discovery trail.
The path moves away from the beach and crosses the dunes. It crosses a road leading to the beach.

(4) Continue on the other side of the road. A little further on, leave the Circuit des Fourrés on your left and follow the Dune-Vive trail. About 50 metres further on, turn right and leave the Circuit des Fourrés on your left.
Finally, the trail rejoins the beach.

(5) Turn left and follow the beach southwards. You will arrive at an access point to Sainte-Cécile beach, next to a lifeguard station and a sand yachting school. Continue along the beach until you reach the next beach access point.

(6) Turn left, leave the beach, climb up above the sea wall, turn immediately right and take the sandy path that runs along the beach at the top of the sea wall (you can stay on the beach, but it is likely to be submerged at high tide during equinoxes). You will arrive at the next beach access point.

(7) Turn left and leave the coast. Join and follow a road that passes in front of the Dunes campsite. At the end of the road, turn right to follow another road. Further on, cross the D940 and continue straight towards Camiers. Enter Camiers and follow the same road until you reach the junction with La Grande Rue, in the centre of the village.

(8) Turn right and follow Grande Rue. It eventually turns left. Cross the railway line and immediately after, turn right and take Rue des Sapins. At the end of the street, continue in the same direction along the path that runs between two campsites. Join the D148E6.

(9) Turn right and follow the road (be careful of traffic, as there is not always much room on the sides of the road). Just after passing under a power line, you will arrive at a paved parking area.

(10) Turn left into the car park and you will arrive in front of a building. Turn left onto the path for the Baie de la Canche Nature Reserve, signposted by an information board. A fairly steep path winds its way up a large dune before forming a wide loop. It passes a viewpoint and eventually joins the D940.

(11) Cross the departmental road and take the track opposite, slightly to the left, which is closed to vehicles (access blocked by a chain). Pass under the railway line, leave a service road on your right and you will come to an information sign.

(12) Take the path that branches off to the left. The path leaves the reserve and arrives at an intersection. Cross the footbridge on the left and continue along a wide track that climbs up the Canche estuary. Follow it to Étaples. In Étaples, the track continues along a tarmac road that turns left in front of a water sports centre and arrives at an intersection.

(13) Turn right and continue to a roundabout. Take the D940 opposite (normally you would keep to the right and follow the cycle path that runs alongside the estuary for about 50 metres before joining the D940, but access was blocked due to roadworks). When you reach a car park, keep to the right to reach the quays and continue to the bridge over the Canche.

(14) Offthe GR®®: take Rue du Port on the left. Continue to Place du Général de Gaulle, pass the museum, then the Town Hall and turn right. Leave the square and take the first left, Rue Maurice Raphaël, and arrive at Place de la Gare (E).

I had the bad idea of going on this hike on the day of the spring tides. The sea was low and the beaches were huge, but the high tide had destroyed all traces of the path into the dunes. As a result, I improvised and finally arrived in Etaples covered in mud from the Bay of Canche.
Otherwise, it was a beautiful hike. I'll do it again in the other direction.

An interesting hike in a varied setting.
From Hardelot Castle, you pass through the forest and find yourself in the dunes, eventually coming out at the sea.
A beautiful walk!
