Caves, chasm and rock on the heights of Cabrespine

A lovely, varied hike with alternating limestone and schist formations and many beautiful views (as far as the Pyrenees).

Description of the walk

Access - From Villeneuve-en-Minervois, take the D111 towards Pradelles-Cabardes. After 6 km through the gorges, you will arrive at the village of Cabrespine. The street is narrow and, at the left-hand bend, continue straight ahead towards the wash house. Then turn right and cross the bridge (the street is still very narrow). After the bridge, turn right and 80 m further on, you will find the Parking des Jardins, where you are likely to find a parking space.

(S/E) Return towards the wash house until you reach the D111.

(1) Cross the departmental road and go up Rue Alphonse Ségui. As soon as you can, turn right between the houses, then left to join a wider road.

After the last house, take the botanical trail that climbs to the left. Along this trail, you will find information about the most common plants in the region. Walk to the fork, a stone's throw from the chasm.

(2) From here, you are 50 metres from the Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine (a must-see in the area). Go up to the right. Continue to the end of the botanical trail.

(3) The botanical trail ends here. Do not continue straight ahead, but turn left.
The path climbs steeply and you will soon come to a fork. Take the path on the right (unless you want to go to Roc d'Agnel).
You will then begin a descent. After about 300 m, you will pass the Coroluna cave.

(4) Continue downhill to the Escoles ravine, then climb back up. Soon you will come to another cave (this one larger), which was once a refuge for resistance fighters.

(5) Descend back down to the stream.

(6) On the day we visited, the stream was dry, so it was very easy to cross. From there, you begin another climb up to a stone monument. Then descend to the village of Trassanel. Take the first street on the right until the next intersection.

(7) Take the road that climbs to the right. This is theGR®36(red and white markings).
This part on the tarmac is not the most pleasant, but the landscape is interesting.
Walk until you come to a stone path.

(8) Keep following theGR®36. You will soon come to a tarmac road.
At a left-hand bend, go straight ahead onto a path (still marked in red and white). After 100 m, you will come to a wider path. Continue to the right until the next junction.

(9) You will come to an even wider stony path. Turn right (leaving theGR® which heads north towards Pradelles). Follow this flat path to the marker opposite the Roc de l'Aigle.

(10) From here, the view is very interesting. Head east towards the rock for a round trip.

(11) Take the time to enjoy the scenery. You will discover a beautiful view of Cabrespine and all the surrounding mountains (including the Pic de Nore). Then return to the marker.

(10) Begin the descent towards the south. Be careful, the path is quite slippery.
After a little over 500 metres, the slope levels out. You will soon come to a gate.

(12) Don't forget to close the gate behind you. Turn left to return to the start of the loop. You will encounter two more gates along this section.

(3) Retrace your steps back to Cabrespine (S/E).
On the way, you can visit the chasm (allow 1 hour for the visit).

A very pleasant hike with little shade. Bring plenty of water during hot weather (significant elevation gain). Don't miss the chance to enter and explore the Coroluna cave, bringing a torch with you.
At point 9 (marker 700), the path has been altered due to the protected status of the site (Natura 2000). Head towards Roc de l'Aigle until you reach a crossroads; turn right to go around the hillock before rejoining the path towards point 11.

During this hike, don't hesitate to enter the Coroluna cave after 2 kilometres, which has some very pretty stalagmites and columns. Bring a torch or your mobile phone.
A little further on is the Maquis cave with its two entrances.
there is a small historical display in front and a memorial before Trassanel.
On leaving Trassanel, don't hesitate to take the path on the right after the hole with the two terraces, towards the Pic de Laure, which avoids a long stretch on the tarmac road.

We had trouble finding point 3 because construction work made the access invisible. However, it is still possible to take it or go around the right side of the chasm because it connects to the circuit
A very beautiful circuit with quite a few elevation changes and only a tiny part of the route that is a bit tedious (the paved section), but when you reach the top, the view is breathtaking.

hike completed on 12/03/2023, in good weather. North wind but surprisingly warm.
one point to watch out for: at point (9), you will need to make a small detour to the east to continue the path, as the path marked just below point (9) has been cut off while nature recovers.
Shortly after point (6), it is possible to go via Pech de Laure, which avoids the road
We came across about ten people in total

Hike completed today
the weather was beautiful in the morning, but fog rolled in and it became a bit overcast.
You have to like rocks because you'll be eating them throughout the hike
so it's important to wear good shoes, as the slate slips easily
magnificent Mediterranean landscapes and two caves to see. Remember to take a torch because the first one is very deep and well worth a visit. The Maquis cave is better lit
can't the section on the road be avoided?
arrival at the Roc de l'Aigle: superb panorama that is well worth the detour

however, the wind is not warm at all, so make sure you wrap up well
easy descent to Cabrespine and return to the car park
it took us 5 hours and 45 minutes, including eating, visiting the caves, etc.

We left on the 6th (from our lodge in Trassanel) and went straight to the Cabrespine chasm (huge!) via 5,4,3,2,1. It took two hours. The elevation changes are significant, so be careful if you're travelling with people who aren't very fit.
Beautiful views, lots of different routes and loops. Make sure you wear good shoes as it's quite rocky and stony.
Don't trust the scale on the map, as the elevation makes it seem longer!
It was perfect in November, but in summer it must be a bit tough and even busier.

Shortened hike with children. Option to do a loop and rejoin at points 4 to 11.
The detour via Roc d'Agnel is magnificent and very windy. You pass by the tree with roots visible in the chasm on the botanical trail, from 2 to 3.

A lovely mid-season walk. The sky was a little low (we couldn't see the wind turbine blades to the north-east) but this didn't affect the route and it was clear under the clouds. We were therefore able to admire the Carcassonne plain but not the Pyrenees, which were hidden by mist (which is a shame, as this is one of the highlights of the route).
The Maquis cave is actually a natural tunnel that you can walk through to get back to the path downstream.
Between 5 and 6, the path parallel to the road and to the east of it is an excellent alternative, as other hikers have pointed out. Thanks to them.
Bring water in summer!

Superb hike, a little technical and acrobatic in places.
Superb views, especially if you push on to the end of the Eagle Rock, where you can look down on Cabrespine...

very pleasant, beautiful views, very wild, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
between 5 and 6, I preferred the trail and I don't regret it at all. It overlooks and passes through charming holm oak woods, passing by a small menhir.
I didn't see anyone else, but that was probably because of the time of year.
i plan to do it again, but this time I'll leave at dawn and park near point 7 so I can enjoy the sunrise at points 8 or 9...

At point 8 at the marker, facing the eagle rock, it should say: descend to the pass towards the eagle rock and from there, return to the eagle rock...

A lovely loop for families, offering beautiful views when the weather is clear.

We set off at 9 a.m. and had lunch around 12.30/1 p.m. between points 7 and 8.

The section between points 5 and 7 is quite boring (time passes slowly, especially with children!), but the short detour to the eagle's rock is worth it (be careful, it's quite dizzying).

Thank you for this beautiful hike.
